Yeah, it's just like Amazon Marketplace sellers, except it sounds like there's less buyer protection... I still buy from Newegg every now and then, but only "sold by Newegg" with rare exceptions (DJI official store comes to mind).
I would buy from Newegg but they haven't been the cheapest on anything in a long time. Besides, Amazon and eBay are less of a risk.

$20 or less ? :p Please post back if you find one.
The one that i have in another system that seems to work appears to be a Dell H310 or H200 flashed with IT firmware. it's based on the LSI 2008

you can get one for pretty close to $20-30. Maybe it was cheaper when i got one back in 2018?

I have several 310's but never seen one as low as $30. Guess some are lucky and some are not. :p

You got any suggestion for a cheap $20 or less 8 port sas controller that will recognize these 10TB+ or bigger drives? I tried adaptec 52445 and 6805T and seems no go even with latest firmware
I've used use HP H240's. $25 when cheap and $45 when expensive last year.

They ARE being shipped. "Picked Up @4:09pm, Sanford, FL"
I ordered at 4am Sat. 19Mar22 (6765 sold at that point; then till now [60 hrs], 450 more sold)

On another matter, @wildpig1234 , your ASR-6805t is NOT your problem (since a 4TB drive works). You gave no relevant info in your help request thread [Link]; I (and maybe others) don't like playing "20 Questions" -- you've used what I call the Mushroom Method Keep 'em in the dark & feed 'em sh*t :). Try giving ALL the information possible. Don't attempt to "filter" it; if you knew what was/wasn't relevant, you probably wouldn't need any help.

I am not sure what else i can include that was not already included.

Both the 52445 and 6805t are using the latest firmware listed on adaptec site. Both will recognize the 4TB HGST fine.

However, neither will work properly with the 10TB. the 52445 controller would say "kernel panic" and not even load the controller bios when the drive is connected. the 6805t would say drive not supported.

The 10TB HGST hdd in question:

HUH721010AL4200
serial 7JK6K9PC
date of manufacture Aug 2017

I have reached out to both adaptec and WDC for answers. Adaptec just got back to me and just claim no support for the drive and won't say anything else...
WDC says they will check to see if there is a firmware for my drive.

The weird thing is that this 10TB works fine on the dell H310 controller.... I guess i might just have to get a few more of those then. I do like adaptec because i've been using their controller for a while and also like the software management. But i am not really using these in raid so i really don't need any fancy software anyway. I just need something that will work!

As i said, i ordered 5 more of the 10TB so i am hoping to get things to work because i like to be able to keep using the 10TB or bigger hdd now since 4TB as an archive medium is a bit too small for my use now. and plus the bigger 10TB are getting to be more cost effective...

Looks like you've made a little progress :): (bold indicates new info)

Some (hopefully) constructive criticism:
Better to specify the (controller) firmware version(s) explicitly.
Instead of "playing interpreter", include actual screen captures and/or console copy/pastes. (As potential Problem Solvers, we don't like to rely on an interpreter who is likely not fluent in "the language".)
While "kernel panic" suggests a Unix OS, better to be specific (flavor and version); this will be germane to the procedures we suggest for further analysis.
Always list HDD model #s, and firmware versions (in the drive [not on the label]).

Also, you should describe how the drive(s) connects to the controller; expander? backplane? etc.
And always try to avoid introducing any variables; i.e. after a successful test of the 4TB, remove it at its connector; then directly substitute the/a 10TB at its connector, and test it.

Instead of rectifying/responding_to the above right now, let's wait till your 5 "new" drives arrive, and see how they behave for you. (increased sample size)

WDC got back to me and claimed that according to that s/n of the drive, it's oem and they don't support oem. so they washed their hands of it too.

I plugged the new 5 drives i just bought with the newer date code 2018 into the dell H310 and it works perfectly. No luck with the adaptec cards so i am returning the 6805t. I might also end up selling my three 52445 cards. No use of me keeping them since they seem to be too picky about what large capacity drive they want to work with!

Yeah, nowadays, I recommend at *least* an ASR-7805 or above if going Adaptec. If using LSI, then any 2nd gen SAS HBA will do, even a 9212-4i4e or a 9211-4i/8i. The older Adaptec cards like what you have should work, but for some reason, they can be finicky.

The good news is you can get a 7805 for around $20 bucks or less on ebay if you look around like @Marsh mentioned. :.)

My last experience with Adaptec many years ago was unpleasant enough to keep me in the LSI world ever since. My most common HBA is the H310. No doubt Dell sold a boat load of them and no doubt there are still a boat load of them in service.

Yeah, well, I think it's coming to an end with adaptec for me right now this time since I now have ten 10TB hdd which should last me for about 2+ years of archival. So for that duration i will be using the dell H310

Seems like the 7805 uses a different breakout cable than the 6805? I have already invested in the type of cable used in the 6805 and the dell h310 so I guess i will stick to the older cable.

Also I think everyone probably notice by now that whenever you add an hdd to adaptec adapter, it seems to reserve a fair amount of space away (1GB in a 4TB drive) inside a hidden partition. Anyone know whats this is for? the dell h310 doesn't do that.

It is NOT the large capacity (after all, your 4TB drive is OK). It IS the 4Kn!
(On the 6805t, you would be perfectly fine with HUH721010AL5200 10TB drives. On the 52445, you could be fine--it would depend on the board's Revision.)

As is typical, "the devil is in the details".

Well, i need an adaptor will a lot of flexibility and the adaptec 54225 andd 6805 inability to work with the 4kn drives would be a problem. Who knows how many more of these drives will be sold from now on and what i can get my hand on. So i need a cheap controller that can handle them all.

Bought one on... the 21st? And it arrived today (24th).

Jan 2018 Manufacture Date
29K Power on Hours
15 Power Cycles

I've already bought a few of these months ago so I knew the seller was legit but thought I'd post what showed up as far as the newer date code vs. the PoH.
