I have an adaptec 52445 which used to be a great controller but then when i plugged a HGST 10TB it says not supported. I bought a 6805T and it also doesn't seem to support that either ;(

But the dell perc H200 H310 seems to support the 10TB.

Kinda really bother me that the trusty adaptec is not compatible with larger newer HDD. Anyone has a thought on this?

If i remember it correctly it was a problem of the 32bit CPU cores used in raid controllers. Remember it's 2004 for sas v1

2^32* (512|4096) ~ 2tb for SATA devices with 512b sectors, 16tb for sas devics with 4096b sectors

The t Models were crippled Versions, i'm Not Sure If it had a limitation for Drive sizes

the 54225 can see the 4TB HGST drives fine. i haven't tried anything bigger than 4TB with the 52445.

Didn't know that 6805T was crippled in anyway. that is so bs because it didn't say that on their webpage with the only thing being different supposedly is the location of connectors.

I think I mixed it up with the 6805e (the 6805t is a 6805 with the sas port pointing upwards)...

The 6805 (6 Series) is SAS2 from 2010-11 and surely should support 48-bit LBAs. Try your 4TB drive on it.

even the 52445 worked with the 4TB. I need support for the 10TB. and so far neither of the two adaptec adaptors has correctly recognize the 10TB hdd. :(

Are you hard-locked into Adaptec? The LSI (Broadcom, now) SAS and SATA raid controllers are dirt cheap on eBay (US$200 including cache and battery for 8 ports is easy to find), and support just about anything you can connect to them, other than NVME. You do have to search for OEM versions to find everything, but a lot of the listings have the LSI equivalent in the text.

Lol.. $200 is about 10X more than i am willing to pay... I just need a cheap controller that will recognize the drive so i can use the drive as a write once backup on the fly. I am not planning any fancy raid setup.

I prefer adaptec but will settle for whatever cheapest 8 port sas controller out there that will let me do this for less than $20 to access and recognize the 10TB+ or greater size. Let me know any suggestion. Thanks.

The 10TB HGST hdd in question:

HUH721010AL4200
serial 7JK6K9PC
date of manufacture Aug 2017

I have reached out to both adaptec and WDC for answers. Adaptec just got back to me and just claim no support for the drive and won't say anything else...
WDC says they will check to see if there is a firmware for my drive.

The weird thing is that this 10TB works fine on the dell H310 controller.... I guess i might just have to get a few more of those then. I do like adaptec because i've been using their controller for a while and also like the software management. But i am not really using these in raid so i really don't need any fancy software anyway. I just need something that will work!

LSI HBAs are much, much cheaper than their RAID cards. Search for "LSI HBA" on eBay, and you'll find plenty under $50. Your current 24i/8e is an expensive option. More SAS lanes means more money.
I always use the hardware RAID because the performance gain from the battery-backed cache is worth the price, especially considering the $200 cards on eBay were close to $1000 MSRP when new.

WDC got back to me and claimed that according to that s/n of the drive, it's oem and they don't support oem. so they washed their hands of it too.

I plugged the new 5 drives i just bought with the newer date code 2018 into the dell H310 and it works perfectly. No luck with the adaptec cards so i am returning the 6805t. I might also end up selling my three 52445 cards. No use of me keeping them since they seem to be too picky about what large capacity drive they want to work with!

It is NOT the large capacity (after all, your 4TB drive is OK). It IS the 4Kn!
(On the 6805t, you would be perfectly fine with HUH721010AL5200 10TB drives. On the 52445, you could be fine--it would depend on the board's Revision.)

As is typical, "the devil is in the details".

I need the flexibility. Not a picky controller. Who knows how many more 4kn drives i will get in the future or what other drives will also use 4kn. If adaptec controllers has some inflexibility on this then i will just have to use the dell/lsi then....

More adaptec controlles for me :)
I have currently 6805, 81605zq and 3162-8i in my "collection". (The 3162-8i were a steal at 500€ @ebay in late 2019 :D)

So far they all worked with hgst husmm 4k ssds and exos x16 hdds
I have 6805t and it didn't work with the 10TB HGST with 4kn

My 54225 didn't work with the 10TB 4kn either. I can understand maybe that it's older but still, it was a premium controller so adaptec shouldve enable support for the 4kn thr an update firmware for it!
