Yes! thickness! do you know the right to use?
No, but looking at the pics it looks like 1.5mm thick pads. You will get better performance with the U6 Pro or CX H1300 thermal putty, it also ends up being cheaper..

I really wanted something with pcie slot to use with a dual 10GbE SFP+ NCIC and ideally an Alder Lake 12100t cpu, for router duties. The AL p-cores should be quite effective at that requiring lower energy use pr megabyte routed. They seem to be unobtanium here and new P3s are very costly in comparison.

So the next best is getting a P340 10500/16GB for the time being, as I don't need full 10 GbE routing yet.
At 300 USD/400€ with shipping to EU and VAT. The P350 Tiny i5 11500 also seems to be unobtanium here. New 10 gen cpus are also costly.
The P360 comes with AD. A12x00 or better would be desirable but they come w GPU it seems so the prices are....

So I'd likely settle for the P340/105000/16 and a dual 10 GbE SFP+ NIC.
Perhaps the AOC-STGF-i2S.

And the pcie riser and bracket for the P340/350.

Any advice?

You can also add an Ethernet card to the m.2/miniPCIe wireless slot, thanks @joeribl for this! They used this kit from AliExpress which uses an Intel i210 and thus is recognised natively in vSphere 7. There are also 2.5GbE cards starting to appear (as of January 2023) but so far these only use Realtek chipsets. Remember you need an A/E key card, the far more common B/M key cards will not work in this slot.
I have tried searching for it but have not found the answer. Does a 5gb card of similar specs exist that could give it a 5gb RJ45 port? I think many will get their inet hand-off this way, and who would like to use the pcie slot for something else.

Or has someone managed to use a NVME M.2 slots for a 5G RJ45?

Hi guys,
I have also started experimenting a bit with Lenovo M720q. I have installed a 2.5" SSD and Proxmox and I check how well opnsense runs on that box.
So far, it's quite nice, howrver has single NIC only, so I configured different VLANs for WAN/LAN etc.
I wonder if there is an "official" Lenovo NIC which would allow me to add one or two more ethernet ports, with a matching bracket? I would prefer if I don't need to 3D print my own.
Also it would be great if it worked with SFP+ NIC. I have a couple X520-DA2 left
but no idea where I can get the correct riser + bracket.

The riser is quite easily available, search eBay for 01AJ940. It provides a PCIE x16 slot running at x8.

Your x520-da2 should work fine, just keep in mind cooling is not optimal with stock configuration and passive cards. You'll very likely need a fan / blower on the card and some other work to get it running properly.

Brackets wise, the easiest way is to print something. I don't believe there's an easily available 2.5/10G card for those boxes, as they're targeted mostly to office environments in their designs. Just search printables or thingiverse for m720q or any other model and you'll find plenty brackets, adapters, fan shrouds and so on.

Proprietary tools from Lenovo are needed to program the serial into the motherboard most likely. Bring it to a Lenovo service center.

Hi,

So, I aquired a riser from WifiCable.
So far I only have a single PM981 SSD to try out the new m.2 slot and it works perfectly, linking at x4 just as expected.

The PCB itself seems well laid out, with lenght matching on the PCIe traces, with various testpoints, all labeled.
Front:

Back:

Space is at a premium on the tiny pcs, so the position of the extra m.2 will always be a compromise, as WifiCable already posted, its possible to use a 2280 SSD without removing the standoff, but I didn't like to bend my SSD, so I remove the standoff.
This is the before (with a random wifi card, to show that it fits, with space for the antenna connectors as well):
before standoff.jpg

And this is the after:
after standoff 1.jpg

after standoff 2.jpg

I will try to source some card to try out the PCIe slot. So far I'm pleased with the extra m.2 slot, working at PCIe 3.0x4 as expected.
I can run some tests if anyone wants to (I'm running OMV bare metal).

no need to walk to a service center for sure. Get a bios update, you'll find all you need to change machine type and serial number

I also received a riser from WiFiCable. Using it on an m920x with a video card plugged into it. I'll be using the m.2 slot on the riser for extra ethernet ports. How are you able to remove the standoff?

You need to do a boot block recovery update.
Add bios update to usb key and plug it to the front usb port.
Then put bios jumper to the reset position and boot the machine. Wait until it's done (machine goes off) put back bios jumper and remove the usb key machine should boot properly now.
