recently had a couple Dell-branded 5100 PRO M2 drives (installed in BOSS-S1 cards in some PowerEdge M640's) die. naturally, the Dell version (model MTFDDAV240TCB-1AR1ZABDA) of this drive seems to be long out of production, and is super expensive.
i bought a few of the standard, non-customized Micron version of these drives (MTFDDAV240TCB-1AR1ZABYY) and after installation and letting the virtual drive rebuild, iDRAC has been throwing alerts that the YY drives have 0% write endurance remaining. this occurs with each of the five replacements i bought. the drives were sold as new, which is whatever, but there's no visible wear on the contacts, and also Micron's Storage Executive software says each of the drives has a full 100% write endurance remaining, along with full health (low power-on counts/hours, zero byte written, etc.).
basically, i'd like to try and write Dell's firmware package (currently at version E013) to these Micron drives. is this possible? the DUP fails both via iDRAC and Windows, saying that there are no compatible drives installed, and i tried convincing Storage Executive's msecli to install the Dell firmware binary but haven't had any luck. weirdly, i can't even get Storage Executive to update the Micron firmware on these things... it tells me that D0MU071 is currently installed and that D0MU075 is available, but even after completing the update and getting a "Success!" message, it remains stuck on D0MU071.
any ideas here, or am i screwed and have to shell out for the real deal Dell sub-model of these things?
