@nle I have seen numbers from a few server resellers. Intel SSDs <0.3% return/ warranty rate. Samsung 850 EVO > 8% on the same spreadsheet.
The S3500 offers power-loss protection, which lets the drive write pending data & shut down correctly when it loses power.Probably a stupid question, but how does this compare to consumer grade SSDs like Samsung EVO 860/960?
@Patrick i don’t doubt it but I am surprised.@nle I have seen numbers from a few server resellers. Intel SSDs <0.3% return/ warranty rate. Samsung 850 EVO > 8% on the same spreadsheet.
Do you think it could be that when people buy Intel they "know" they need it due to the way higher cost?@nle I have seen numbers from a few server resellers. Intel SSDs <0.3% return/ warranty rate. Samsung 850 EVO > 8% on the same spreadsheet.
Yes. Note that the smaller drives are slower, as typical for flash. Full specs in ARK.Are these ones of the same family / category?
INTEL 160GB SSD DC S3500 2.5" 7mm SATA III Solid State Drive 6Gb/s 20nm MLC | eBay
Never ordered from CDW outlet before. Anyone have experience with them? The number of ssd deals coming up as of late is really nice to see. I think once capacities increase and the sas variants become more available, they'll definitely start to even eat up some of the bulk storage market.
In just a quick search, I even found 2tb versions of the s4500 in the cdw outlet for not much more than the OP ebay units:
INTEL DC S4500 1.92TB SATA 2.5IN SSD - SSDSC2KB019T701-BSTK - Z - CDW Internal Use/Service Pts - CDW.com
INTEL DC S4500 1.92TB SATA 2.5IN SSD - SSDSC2KB019T701-BSTK - Z - CDW Internal Use/Service Pts - CDW.com

But 850 Pro and probably 860 Pro doesn't have power loss protection as the S3500 has. Also S3500 has higher endurance. So in my mind S3500 is better choice. Especially for VM and homelab. Even used one.I just don't want to risk it, we built high quality servers. I don't want to put a used drive in the system drive, although our system drive isn't really in use during production, it's mostly the raid Array, I still want a solid Samsung Pro SSD. I feel better, in my mind i feel like hard\dirty shutdowns are handled better with a brand new Samsung Pro SSD.
