Great find. Nice drives. I actually like the idea of using 480GB drives for Proxmox boot nowadays. These are cheap enough that I do not mind just having the larger capacity for the small chance it is needed.

The number of ssd deals coming up as of late is really nice to see. I think once capacities increase and the sas variants become more available, they'll definitely start to even eat up some of the bulk storage market.

In just a quick search, I even found 2tb versions of the s4500 in the cdw outlet for not much more than the OP ebay units:
    INTEL DC S4500 1.92TB SATA 2.5IN SSD - SSDSC2KB019T701-BSTK - Z - CDW Internal Use/Service Pts - CDW.com
    INTEL DC S4500 1.92TB SATA 2.5IN SSD - SSDSC2KB019T701-BSTK - Z - CDW Internal Use/Service Pts - CDW.com

Tempting to pull the trigger on this for L2ARC, but I know I would benefit more from splurging an upgrade from 16 to 32GB of Ram or Getting 10GB Networking between my new server and my main Desktop :D

If you don't already have 64GB in your FreeNAS, adding this for L2ARC won't do much of anything.

Source: google and the fact that I have one of these for L2ARC in my FreeNAS and it does almost nothing.

Thank you for the feedback, that’s very helpful. I think the only other things I may do now are 10g network upgrade between main desktop and freenas box, and add an ssd for the plex jail.

I just did exactly that, but freenas just won't saturate it, lol!

I just bought a freenas that can't even saturate a 1g link even though it has sas drives in raid5.

Oh, I can saturate gig-e just fine, I just won't be able to saturate 10gig with it.

Yeah, not sure what's up with my freenas then. Maybe it was the computer I was using as it only had an older atom processor and xp embedded.

Don't put a 480GB L2ARC in a box with only 16GB of Ram. Exact numbers are tricky but using 5x RAM for L2ARC is less wrong that many rules of thumb. I was going to put an 80GB L2ARC in my microserver with only 16GB of RAM ... but didn't.

Probably a stupid question, but how does this compare to consumer grade SSDs like Samsung EVO 860/960? The price difference is not that much.

I'm thinking about upgrading my 250gb SSD that I use for VMs in my R710

From what I learned in another thread is that based on the size of this unit, it's designed for enterprise use so it has more spare sectors, etc.vs the consumer drives.
