Samsung’s PM9A3 SSD includes enterprise power loss protection (PLP) [...] the Samsung PM9A3 SSD has been designed to prevent data loss resulting from unexpected power shutdowns with its PLP architecture. Upon detection of a failure, the SSD immediately uses the stored energy from its PLP capacitors to provide enough time to transfer the cached data in DRAM to the flash memory, ensuring no loss of data.

As knorps said, it's a HBA. Firmware was ancient so I flashed the latest firmware (P16) and bios.

I can check later, but seeing how idle power consumption is about 100x (2.5W vs. 0.03W) of a 970 Pro, i would assume the PM9A3 doesn't support them.

Thanks. 2.5W sounds reasonable, because it wouldn't surprise me if ASPM was also unavailable. I just wouldn't want to have M.2 drives stuck at 8W+ idle, it adds up with a higher number of drives.

@tubs-ffm reported idle temps of around 60degC, seems in line with higher power consumption, but also way lower delta of temps when active vs idle (around 4degC) compared with consumer drives.

This seller is not honest or at least not following ethical and decent practices!!

This is what has happened:
I bought one Samsung Datacenter SSD PM9A3 3.84TB M.2 for 300 EUR + 20 EUR for handling & shipping. A few days later I receieve a NAKED M.2 drive rattling around in this paper envelope ('antistat' broken):

I took it directly from postal office to server room an within the hour I could conclude the drive came DOA to me.

I tried on three different motherboards all the way down to barebone, reset BIOS with only this SSD installed. No dice, all hangs:
Supermicro MBD-X12SCA-5F
Gigabyte W480M VISION W
OdroidH2

All combinations, all motherboards, hangs on initialize and cant even get into BIOS.

SSD was DOA. Dead as a doornail...

Now, anyone that writes about insurance this and that and charge you 20 EUR for shipping & handling but STILL only pays 5.20 for a postmark and slap it on a paper envelope AND not even bother to package a 300 EUR drive properly (a naked M.2 drive in a paper envelope, CMON!) are cutting corners to make an extra buck. We all know that and we all have cut corners sometimes. However, when it then arrives to the buyer DOA, we take responsible action. This has not happened with this seller.

He simply refuses to acknowledge that sending the M.2 drive naked in an paper envelope could have anything to do with it and instead constantly circle back to "It was working when I sent it", which obviously is a moot point when you sent it naked in a fricking paper envelope on regular postal system! Also, to the matter it should be said that we had a transaction before that also went through the Swedish postal system (I thought it was DHL all the way) and I was extremely clear in my opinion about how the Swedish postal system treats packages! ..still he send the M.2 drive naked in a paper envelope to shave of a few bucks and minutes. ..and now here we are and he simply refuses to take responsibility.

I told him I would send back the drive so he could check it out and tried to get a somewhat a cooperative dialog going but only got answers like "my adress is on the envelope" and "ofcourse I will test it" (but not any pointers towards what action taken IF/When confirmed dead). You know the type of slimey seller behaviour...

..and look and behold, once arrived at him he simply gave the hand and replies "it is dead but it was working when I sent it and I can prove it" with not a single acknowledgement on to how it was sent and packaged. We have all seen the type..

So. Stay away!!

I will get my money back because that is who I am and I dont live too far from him but you others should be wary about this seller.
