Hey everbody,
I‘ve come into the next round of Planing my personal NAS.
As i Mentioned in previous threads i want to use FreeNAS with ZFS (RAID-Z2) for the storage of my movies and music and photos.
Maybe i want to stream mkv files (movies) - but only for myself (which means that there a few...
Hallo again,
I changed some of my components for my personal NAS due to some space problems in my room.
I now have the follow Hardware-list for my FreeNAS device:
RAM: 2x Samsung DIMM 32GB, DDR4-2400, CL17-17-17, reg ECC
Cache-SSD: 2x Samsung SSD 850 EVO 250GB
HDD: 8x Seagate IronWolf NAS HDD...
Hallo everybody,
I again have a few questions about the usage (or building) of a NAS Server.
I want to create a private NAS with a huge amount of files (I think there are about 18 Terabyte of files I want to save) and my biggest fear is to lose them due to Bit Rot.
So I Read that ZFS should be...
Hello Everybody,
Like I mentioned in a previous thread I want to use ZFS for my personal storage.
I found a cheap deal for a Hard drive storage which supports JBOD.
My question, Does this JBOD storage have to support ZFS or not.
technically it should not matter, I think.
Hallo Everybody,
First of all I want to apologize for some potential mistakes in my English but I’m not an English native speaker …
Also I don’t know if I put the question into the right topic, correct me if I’m wrong
My Question is about the ZFS file System
I want to use ZFS for a...
Planning to use ZFS for shared storage and need advice...
This system has 8 x 3.5" drive bays and I was thinking of going RAID-Z2 with 8x2TB drives that I already have. I THINK I need 2 pools - 1 private pool for storing database backups and 1 pool for public file sharing.
Backups are nightly...
Hello!
I am currently in the making of a server upgrade, current machine dual x5650 96gb ram running Unraid server.
Parts that i already have. Dual E5-2690v1 , 12x8GB eec rdimm. LSI 9207-8i HBA. 16x300gb SAS 2.5 drives. INTEL 910 400gb ssd. Quad intel 1000vt nic-card.

Hi everyone,
So obviously Alpine is getting a lot of attention lately since Docker is popular, but it also has a plethora of packages commonly available in larger-footprint distros - namely KVM, libvirt and ZFS. It runs easily from RAM since it's so small, and is also unencumbered by systemd...

I was just looking at the release notes for the Solaris 11.3 patches (version 11.3.23.5) from August 18 , and I noticed several references to Solaris 12 ! (see screenshot ) very wierd since Oracle killed Solaris 12 a long time ago and fired all the developers.
I guess they just missed to clean...
Edit / Conclusion:
These errors were intermittently being logged against drives in a SAS expander JBOD for writes only due to a mostly good, but partly bad port on an LSI SAS9206-16e card running IT mode P20.00.07 firmware:
mpt2sas_cm1: log_info(0x31120303): originator(PL), code(0x12)...
Sorry if this has already been answered elsewhere. I did a forum search but couldn't find exactly what I was looking for.
I have a client with an LSI 9270-8i, with 8 drives currently connected. No RAID, just pass-thru to the OS (currently Server 2012 R2). This works fine for their current...
Hello,
i wonder if there is a way to have more fine grained control about ARC usage than limiting arc for the whole kernel module, and therefore all pools.
Let's say i have three pools, one for the root-filesystem, the other for data and one for backup. I want the root-pool to consume a fairly...
In this thread, I posted pics of my recently-rebuilt home server. Now that the hardware part is done (maybe?), I'm thinking it's time to revisit the OS/software side. So I'm soliciting feedback.
I don't think anything is really broken, but mostly non-optimal due to having grown up...

I want to build One Computer To Rule Them All.
I plan to have a multiheaded setup, with one pair of monitors, keyboard + mouse each Windows and Linux, running in VMs. Windows will be used for gaming and graphic art projects, Linux for data science/bioinformatics, so performance is important.
I...

I had a Proxmox host using 2x 2.5" 1TB HDDs lying around as boot drives. I selected zfs rpool and it worked great for the past year.
Then, /dev/sdb died. It's not even on the controller?
I had remote hands move another 1TB drive from a random storage array into the slot. So I've now got a...
Thought I would elicit some advice from the group regarding an upgrade I am working on.
Current Setup:
Synology 1812+
4x8TB RAID5 + 845 DC Evo 960GB as read cache for Media Storage (The spinning drives will be repurposed for an offsite backup)
2x PM853t 960GB Raid1 for NFS ESXi and Docker...
Poking around the internet looking for a NAS Distro to try. I was planning on going to FreeNAS Corral since it had Docker Integration...but we know how that went :(
Seems like most people have gone to ZFS historically because it was more stable than BTRFS, but is that still the case today...
