Fixed. I guess directly linking to the file didn't work. Just find the latest firmware there by searching for LHGNA9G0.
I'm registered at HDDGURU but HDDGURU Files Wouldn't accept my credentials, guess it must be a separate entity.

But it did let me download the file so there.

I just updated my firmware using this post and this firmware.
I tried to update through the "hugo" tool, but it failed. Next stop will be "sg_write_buffer", but I want to make sure I won't brick these...

Were yours model HUH721010AL42C0 internally? On the outer sticker mine says HUH721010AL4200 but when I look at smartctl it's HUH721010AL42C0 with firmware A3Z4.

My drives are HUH721010AL4200. I think the firmware is the same for both but don't quote me on that.

Flashing that firmware actually changed the drive back to "HUH721010AL4200" with revision set to "A9G0" now. Now I need to test it to be sure it doesn't mess anything up, and then I guess I have to do this on all of them now since I don't have access to that original firmware :-D. I think the 42C0 in the prior name was because these were OEM Cisco drives with custom firmware.

Drive seems fine to me after quick testing, so now i'm back to non-OEM version, sweet!

er, pardon my ignorance but what exactly is Hugo? I found this page -

But after reading it I still don't know what it is. Nor do I understand this page of gibberish. Sounds like grossly un user friendly code to me.

Different Hugo

See
ftp://atxlab.ddns.net/ftp/hdd/hgst/Hugo/7.4.5/

If sg_write_buffer work ok for flashing, just use sg_write_buffer , easy to install on Ubuntu.
It is part of sg utils tools

There is a windows version of sg utils tools.
I usually use Ubuntu to flash the firmware.
Thanks. My bad.

I've used sg_utils for Windows and haven't had any issues. I also have a Linux Mint Cinnamon available so I should be covered.

And btw, I recently needed to use ipmitool to set fan speeds in a Quanta server and gave up trying to get it to work in Windows. After many hours I trying ran across remarks like "Yea, you can get it work but it will never work right". I switched over to Linux and it was stupid easy to install and works flawlessly.

Why those and not the ones in the original post for $100 each? Could the $100 4kn ones be reformatted to 512b sector size?
Just to match my other part # exactly... and they have BO, so it's not that much more.

But, realistically they probably are fine to mix and match :D

Just curious on hours... they're going in to expand my RZ3, but all my other drives were NEW so adding a drive with 30k hours is not something I'd like to really do if I can avoid it :D

I crossed my finger this morning, upgraded firmware of 12 HGST drives

I had to make a small change , increase buffer to 4K , otherwise, it would error out with no enough buffer

To check device name , firwmare version
sdparm /dev/sg{0..11} | grep HGST

sg_write_buffer -vv -b 4k -m 5 --in LHGNA9G0.bin /dev/sg0

wait 1 to 2 min for each drive

sdparm /dev/sg{0..11} | grep HGST
/dev/sg0: HGST HUH721010AL4200 A9G0

The drives are already in use.
No, I did not tested performance before or after upgrade firmware.

Reason:
Want to flash to HGST firmware from Cisco firmware now.
I do'nt want to think about drives firmware upgrade few years down,
especially , trusted folks here in the forum already proved the HGST firmware are working.
