Should I adjust for zero air gap or put a little bit PCB pressure /like all PC cpu coolers/?
Originally I used 0.3mm copper shims with thermal paste, between the CPU and cooler block. Worked just fine and had no issues with sustained Prime95 loads, but I wanted to see if removing the extra thermal interface would improve anything.

The janky solution I came up with was to stack a piece of high density foam (cut from some SSD packaging I had) and a bottle cap on the backside of the CPU, and use the bottom case panel to press it down. I cut the foam so there would be 3-5mm of compression when the bottom panel was installed. It's working well so far, maybe a couple degrees cooler after stabilizing in Prime95, and ~1c cooler at idle on my OPNsense box. I'd say it's not worth the trouble if you've already installed shims or something, but if you need a quick and free fix, it can work.

I found that if you use only the foam to bridge the gap between PCB and bottom panel, it compresses too easily and doesn't maintain pressure well once the foam takes a set. That's why I used the bottle cap to fill space.

OK thanks I will try using copper shims The thermal resistance is reverse proportional to the surface area - 1/S low
The CPU contact point remains the hotspot

Thanks @Stovar for #2489.

I found "acustic noise reduction" as "acoustic noise mitigation" here:
  • Advanced -> Power & performance -> CPU - Power Management Control -> CPU VR Settings -> Acoustic Noise Settings -> Acoustic Noise Mitigation
Edit: "Converted" those BIOS settings into tables with exact names taken from Changwang BIOS from 2023-04-18 (N5105 v3, 4L-V01)

I am new to the forum. I purchased a 5105 unit that I got back in February. Been running bare metal OpnSense on it for a couple months and it has been running pretty well. One thing that I have noticed though checking the smart data for my 500gb nvme is that there seems to be a lot of writes.

1.67Tb seems like a lot for a couple of months. Today, I tried experimenting with adding a /var/log RAM disk and /tmp RAM disk in System - Settings - Miscellaneous. Writes seem to still be happening. Can anyone else running OpnSense verify what kind of writes they are seeingon their setups? Thanks.

Wow, that looks massive. I was investigating OpnSense for mine (a 5100 from wooyi) to run in a proxmox VM. This sure will need checking before I commit to it.

Is there something like linux iotop for BSDs ? Searching a bit...

Yes there is, can you try to find the culprit with:

top -m io -o total
or
iostat -w 1

EDIT: Just launching my VM now to have a look and compare with your findings...

EDIT2: I don't see a lot of writes, but the VM is quite new and barebones from the install nothing added at all...

1 to 3 MB every 5 secs may add to >1TBW after a few monthes, if my math is right...

Your filesystem is not full, so where does that go ?

I have a rather interesting problem which I am sure has a perfectly reasonable explanation (not). So basically I have a Topton but with the i1135G7 and the i225V 4 port ethernet. My problem is that if I passthrough port 1 or 4 (enp2s0, enp5s0) to a proxmox VM it fails with a message
"Can't go from D3cold to D0, device inaccessible" or something like that. If I use ports 2 and 3 then it works flawlessly. Do ports 1 and 4 have a special function that I am not aware of?

Not sure. Here is disk usage:

0% / [zfs] (1.1G/442G)
1% /boot/efi [msdosfs] (1.8M/260M)
0% /var/mail [zfs] (96K/441G)
0% /zroot [zfs] (96K/441G)
0% /usr/home [zfs] (96K/441G)
0% /usr/ports [zfs] (96K/441G)
0% /var/crash [zfs] (96K/441G)
0% /usr/src [zfs] (96K/441G)
0% /tmp [zfs] (4.0M/441G)
0% /var/log [zfs] (67M/441G)
0% /var/audit [zfs] (96K/441G)
0% /var/tmp [zfs] (100K/441G)
0% /var/log [tmpfs] (228K/3.9G)
0% /tmp [tmpfs] (7.1M/3.9G)

Went into Reporting and Settings and turned off Unbound DNS reporting and RRD. Writes seem to happen less frequently. I don't know.

I'm new in this forum and I have one stupid questions
1. How can I search search information in this forum. - e.g. I'm searching for optimal BIOS version and BIOS settings for Topton N5105/4xI226 board
2. Is there a moderator of this forum? -137 pages in single thread can be a trigger for splitting and cleanup actions.

Has anyone gotten Server Core 2022 installed on the Topton?

I have an older variant with i225-V and installing drivers for the Ethernet adapters is seemingly impossible

The i225 identifies itself as PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_15F3&SUBSYS_00008086&REV_03

However, even after disabling Secure Boot and signed driver enforcement - I still cannot install the driver from the Windows Admin Center

1683760258371.png

I downloaded ver 28 of the Intel Ethernet Driver Pack and changed the driver inf in the \PRO2500\Winx64\WS2022 directory to include the relevant DEV ID i.e. I added to the [Intel.NTamd64.10.0...17763] section the entry for the E15F3_3NC device as highlighted below

I still cannot get anything installed on WS2022 Core. Has anyone succeeded in getting drivers installed on 2022 core for this PC?

A quick question, did you try manually selecting the driver on the device from the device manager?

There is no GUI in Server Core - I can do this for Server but for Core, you have to use pnputil and devcon to 'force' drivers for a specific INF and device ID. It's still not the same as in the GUI where you can simply choose a different driver to install for a given dev ID

Hi !

I bought one of these for cheap (50 Euros) on an auction.
It was new in it original sealed package (apparently coming for a batch of unclaimed parcels).

The exact model is MW-JSL2.5g-4l.
Please note the dash between 2.5g and 4l as apparently, there is also a similar model named MW-JSL2.5g4l (without dash).

It seems that MW-JSL2.5g-4l and MW-JSL2.5g4l have very similar specs. The only visible difference is that the former has a VGA socket, while the later has a DP socket.

I made a stupid mistake upon receiving the mini-pc: First thing i did has been to update the bios, using this BIOS:

I was planning to save the originalbios before updatingwith the new one, however, i press a random key instead of ESC during th 5 seconds timeframe, and the update process started right away :(

The good news is that the bios update process went smoothly.

the bad news is that the updated bios is older than the Stock one!

Original Bios, dated from August 2022

Bios from CWWK web page, dated from May 2022

First question, By any chance, does someone has a backup of the bios from August?

Second bad news, (which may or may not be related to my bios update) , The box runs well except if i plug my NVME ssd. (Crucial P3).
If the P3 is in place, the PC won't startup at all (no power led, no beep, nothing. Just dead). After removing the SSD, the PC will start normally.

Second Question : Any idea what may cause this ? Unfortunately, i don't have any other SSD on hand to test if the root cause is the SSD itself or the PC.

Thanks for your time! :)

Follow up on my previous post:
Tokay I tried my neighbor's ssd , a 250gb patriot.
The PC can't boot with this one too. (No LED, no beep, no display) .
It is likely a bios or hardware problem on the motherboard.
I think i'll stick with a Sata SSD for now.

@grotim

Isn't this one compatible with your motherboard and newer? Says "2022/9/29".

If i trust Google Translate, there is the following warning in the description of the download page:
Reminder: Before updating, please confirm that the privately printed model on the green motherboard is: MW-JSL2.5G4L, (Special attention: please do not update if the display interface of MW-JSL2.5G-4L is VGA+DP version) After the update is successful, restart and restart Recognize the memory once. Some memories take a long time to recognize for the first time. Please do not turn off the power during the recognition process.
My version is MW-JSL2.5G-4L with VGA, so i understand that this version is not suitable for me.
