The DL380 Gen8 server Hard Drive back plane is designed to work on 6G and 12G Speeds .It is depends on storage controller and hard drives which is used in the server .

Not only that is not true the person who said that is retarded. You can't push 12G speeds trough the cabling on that backplane. It would do 10G at best and the controller would negotiate to 6G. They can claim whatever they want but you can't beat physics. Sff-8087 is not capable of 12G speeds.
They tried to pull this bullshit on their G9s too using 8087 backplanes with 12G 8087 cards and it was the exact same thing. Io errors and 6G negotiation.

if going the path of buying originaly sas2 hardware and upgrade it im again a fan of shelves tbh

When im buying 30-40 24LFF shelves its at times cheaper to take 40x 24LFF sas2 and 20x 24SFF sas3.
Pick the 40 sas3 modules to put one in each 24LFF and throw away most of the SFF chassises.
(Most only use them for jbod with top module so rare to have anybody wanting 2nd one)

They tried to pull this bullshit on their G9s too using 8087 backplanes with 12G 8087 cards and it was the exact same thing. Io errors and 6G negotiation.
I hate the route of the 12G expander card instead of having the option for one large SFF backplane so much.
By how focused they are on cables on the G9 when adding the card ive just assumed they are higher rated for the 12g 8087 skus.

Hi
What CPU does the Server Support?
Feels like "not so long" since 2683v4 was 60-80$ and now i had 25$/ea accepted last i bought some.
The are currently sell on ebay for EUR 24,20.
I have currently 2x

with an ESXi who replace the Win OS who shown here.
Do I need an special Screw driver to be precise with the tourqe when I swap the CPU?
I just dont want to damage the Server since I invest a lot of money in small thinks like Adapter and so one.

Wikipedia say I use:

E5-2640 v320 MB2,6 GHz
Q 3 '14
8
90 W

So that mean one of them:
Intel Xeon (Broadwell) – Wikipedia ?
(Sorry for the German Link but for the Table it dont matter I would say.)
Do you know what the max TDP is who the server can handle and run quiet?
I must look into the ESXi manual what the max for the free esxi is.

Yes, I run 2 x 2660v4 and tested a 2690v4 as well. However its mentioned in the manual.

No limit. You can manually overwrite the fan speed. I have no issues running the 2x 2660v4 at 26% fan speed under full load.

There is no limitations on memory or sockets. As I recall there was a limit on vCPUs per VM of 8.

The CPU support is indeed a bit of a nuisance with ESXi or VMWare in general. There are workarounds, but I do not know if they are applicable to all CPU's. I scrapped ESXi on all my servers due to that, and also due to the everchanging upgrade method. This was on ESXi version 6 through 7, mind you.

Every time there was an upgrade, if you wanted it you could not do it via the interface, always get the upgrade files and apply it on the physical machine or via Console (IBMC for Huawei). ... and always adding the switch "allowlegacycpu" to the installation script. If you don't mind throwing CLI commands at the server, there are ways to upgrade it, but they seemed to change with every released update. I documented all the ways I did this and was able to compare over time. The command syntax was often different.

Ref: Syntax for an upgrade CMD to ignore CPU requirements (posted by me)

Maybe it is better now with version 8?

v4 is fully supported without any restrictions.
VMware Compatibility Guide - cpu
Must have missed that. Sorry if I mislead anyone... it was mostly relevant for my old HPE servers running X5690.
After checking again, it seems all my current servers have compatible CPU's, those in my signature.

Still worth taking in to consideration when getting a server or upgrading CPU's.

Mine are:
Cores 16
Threads 32
Name Intel Xeon v4
Code Name Broadwell-E/EP
Package Socket 2011 LGA
Technology 14nm
Specification Intel Xeon CPU E5-2683 v4 @ 2.10GHz
16 Cores, for additional 10€

I wonder if E5-2683v4 can be upgraded one step more... https://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Xeon/Intel-Xeon E5-2683 v4.html#rel_cpus , 2699, 2698... hmmm

Looking at HW Comp chart: Computing Product Compatibility Checker

2699 is expensive, but there are others...2697 with 18 Cores. Maybe a x-mas present for the server...do I need 4 more cores and 200Mhz more... ? Na, more RAM is better. :)

I made a SFF caddy, since I needed a few and could not wait for them to be delivered from China.
Prints failry easy with minimal support. Mine were done with ABS+. Hope it helps.

I bought a set of rails for that server from them a while ago, but now I got another one and they don't have those rails in stock anymore, that's why I was wondering if anyone knew if any other ones would be compatible.
