Not only that is not true the person who said that is retarded. You can't push 12G speeds trough the cabling on that backplane. It would do 10G at best and the controller would negotiate to 6G. They can claim whatever they want but you can't beat physics. Sff-8087 is not capable of 12G speeds.Quote from HPE forum
The DL380 Gen8 server Hard Drive back plane is designed to work on 6G and 12G Speeds .It is depends on storage controller and hard drives which is used in the server .

dl380 g8 25SFF , 12Gb or 6Gb?
Hi all, What speed of backplane expander at dl 380 g8 25SFF, 12Gb or 6Gb? In the documentaion (https://hwf.com.ua/content/uploads/files/user-guide-hpe-proliant-dl380e-generation8-gen8.pdf) page 95 ilustrated two mini-sas ports, so this two ports are four lanes with 6Gb or 12Gb per lane? And...community.hpe.com
I hate the route of the 12G expander card instead of having the option for one large SFF backplane so much. They tried to pull this bullshit on their G9s too using 8087 backplanes with 12G 8087 cards and it was the exact same thing. Io errors and 6G negotiation.
The are currently sell on ebay for EUR 24,20.Feels like "not so long" since 2683v4 was 60-80$ and now i had 25$/ea accepted last i bought some.
All v3 and v4 aswell as QS.What CPU does the Server Support?
No requirement. The screws have a spring, they have the right amount of pressure. The screws are all the way down. Torque has nothing to do with pressure of the cooler.Do I need an special Screw driver to be precise with the tourqe when I swap the CPU?

Yes, I run 2 x 2660v4 and tested a 2690v4 as well. However its mentioned in the manual. So that mean one of them:
Intel Xeon (Broadwell) – Wikipedia ?
(Sorry for the German Link but for the Table it dont matter I would say.)
No limit. You can manually overwrite the fan speed. I have no issues running the 2x 2660v4 at 26% fan speed under full load.Do you know what the max TDP is who the server can handle and run quiet?
There is no limitations on memory or sockets. As I recall there was a limit on vCPUs per VM of 8.I must look into the ESXi manual what the max for the free esxi is.
Must have missed that. Sorry if I mislead anyone... it was mostly relevant for my old HPE servers running X5690.v4 is fully supported without any restrictions.

Hopefully until I have to buy a new one many year will pass by.Still worth taking in to consideration when getting a server or upgrading CPU's.
