Im not having any issue with them ramping up.
My boxes are not very full specs tho, its just the cisco 2x40gbe mlom card and a tesla P4/P40.
Was planning on P3605/P4608 card in each for cache but c240 m4 supports converting 2 bays to U.2 so just gone that route instead.

If getting fan issues and not able to override it then probably same fix as those running firmwares with the fan issue on HP boxes.
Short 2 pins in header to let server read it as 100% and replace fans with lower rpm.


Depends how much ram i suppose, cpus have plummeted for v4 pretty much costwise.
Feels like "not so long" since 2683v4 was 60-80$ and now i had 25$/ea accepted last i bought some.

Im no expert but have bought a few hundread servers in Europe by now, as i see it you generaly come out better speccing a CTO than buying with a spec if not winning a bid below expected.


I got one dl380 gen9 24sff and as much as i like it, its a fairly expensive spec.
With gen9 they moved to using 8+8+8 as 3 seperate cages and a pcie sas expander card rather than option for one large backplane like previous gens.

Even if you get one already 24sff they have generaly removed the card+cables.
And just the sas3 expander card was costing same as the full huawei box last i looked.


The 40gbe cards i got for c240 M4 is M4+M5 supported so might be going with cisco for next gen also i suppose.
Started seeing some M5 CTO boxes pop up in the 300-400$ area in low quantities.

If 25/100gbe switches drop alot in pricing before that im probably dumping cisco and going with HPE Apollo.

I dont see c240 M5 boxes for 300-400 euros... where can i find it?

They pop up now and then on ebay, most listings are still at 500-700 area.

32gb for a dual cpu config, id expect a bunch of "junk size" sticks that you end up replacing.
Same for the lowend v3 cpu will typicaly get replaced, and then you are pretty much back to overpaying for a CTO box.

You could also probably get it for less just making a offer on their listing with that spec on their main account tho.
Generaly their auctions start 10% what they have it listed for accepting offers, and they usualy accept offers more than 10% below asking.

Looking at their other stuff im tempted to make a 250€ offer on a few of these intel 2U4N

Same for the lowend v3 cpu will typicaly get replaced, and then you are pretty much back to overpaying for a CTO box.

Really? that intel 2U4N is interesting.... i am not sure what i will do with it...
I am mostly looking for a 2U serveur with sff 2,5, because i have some sas hdd and sas ssd's 2,5 , like a storage server sff

and with pcie gpu riser compatible with my Pcie tesla v100 16 gb... and cant complain... a lot of deals ...
I would like a xeon scalable server but these are still expensive... like hp dl 380 gen10...or cisco ucs c240 m5...

They start from 600-700 now for CTO boxes, not long since they were starting 900-1100 so dropping somewhat nicely.
Should not be too long for them to start in the 400 area.

I like the 4200 boxes and the flexibility of the 2000 series that has both single and double height modules that can be mixed, so can use double height units when needing gpus etc

Yes , this Apollo looks very interesting.

I am not sure if Apollo 4200 gen 9 supports a full length high profile GPU.

Anyone has had a try at turning this into a sas3 jbod? In theory all you would have to do it figure out the power pin out and make a cable. The problem would be cooling since the fans work by plugging into the mobo.
Thoughts?

Just started messing with the second one for the DAS project. Seller took 100€ + shipping.
Turns out the backplane works fine without the monitoring crap and it just needs power.
Also all it needs is 12V 3.3V and ground. This might be the cheapest way to get a sas3 das. just need to rig up a psu and cooling.

The model I'm currently looking at comes with a Huawei BC61ESMN SR130 SAS- does it support IT Mode/HBA for ZFS?

Oh, updates are easy to get.
I just created an account on the huawei homepage and registered the serial number for the server.
Warranty expired in 2021, but I can download all drivers, firmwares etc.

There are regularly sas3 shelves at 50-100€ if looking for the various rebrands.

But the server conversion is not much more i suppose and can be reverted to server later for sale.

xyratex rebrands (or newer seagate rebrands) at under 100 for 12LFF with both psus/sas3 i would not consider rare.

i generaly dont post shelves, multinode boxes or pcie ssds that i find deals on in Europe.
Those threads almost never get any interest so just spams down the deals people are interested in as i see it.

Can you provides some examples? I can convert my DL380 G8 it would cost me around 135€ majority of that cost is from caddies
