    HGST Ultrastar 7K4000 HUS724040ALS640 4TB 7200RPM SAS 6Gbps 3.5" HDD | eBay.

$60 each is kinda high price still. I got 10 for $470 a few yrs back. Does anyone have a better deal?

I used 4TB SAS HGST for archival purpose as they are cheaper than BD-R in $/TB cost and MUCH more convenient as you don't have to spend time making the disc layout, burning discs and retesting the disc. Some people might say but nothing beats optical for long term reliability... maybe... but then again, i don't keep on using these drives for long time. As soon as I fill them, they get disconnected and store away..

That's excellent price. I guess for that price i might try out the WD over HGST. Maybe it could also depend on how many hr or bytes are written.

That deal i got on the HGST 4TB a few years back 10 for $470 was great. The drives were confirmed to have less than 24hr each with about 4TB data total written (likely only due to surface testing by the seller before selling).

Much appreciated if anyone can point to a good deal if you see one. I need a bunch more soon. I am down to my last two 4TB hdd. good for maybe 6 more months at most.

Have you had any that died while in storage? ie, you wouldn't be able to retrieve the data off of them after a certain amount of time?

@wildpig1234 I see a lot of deals in the $45-50 range for 4TB HGST drives.

if you search ebay for the following strings/filters:

"HGST 4TB" or "HGST 4TB SAS" and I usually apply "buy it now" or "accepts offer" listings, sort by price.

Another way I look for stuff in quantity is:

"HGST 4TB lot" and apply "accepts offers" or "buy it now" listings, sorted by price.

Those selling "lots" or individually with quantity on hand are usually more willing to accept offers. Also, if you find a good seller, after buying from them, find their PayPal address (from the transaction) or direct contact (e.g., they sent you an invoice with contact info), so next time you see something you want, reach out directly and some sellers are willing to do 10-20% off outside eBay. Still use PayPal or CC to protect yourself in case the transaction doesn't go well.

I've found that my ancient CD-Rs discs have lasted decades. However, almost all my DVD-R have corruption or bad sectors that are lost forever now. I was going to switch to M-Disc, but never got around to it after storing everything i cared about on a single server, which is backed up automatically to 2 other locations.
