Hi, people,

I recently purchased one of these boards for a workstation build I was assembling. I went through some of the pages of this thread, and saw there is a lot concerning this board, and could not quite figure out where/how to fix the particular issue I am facing.

I just assembled the parts, but the system is not posting. I am using an Epyc 7C13, with 512 GB of RAM with 8 Samsung
M386A8K40BM2-CTD 64 GB modules, and the Tyan S8030 GM2ME board. When I purchased, I took care to choose parts that were in the motherboard QVL.

I am also using a Noctua NH-U14S TR4-SP3 as cooler, a Nvidia Titan V as GPU and a MSI MEG Ai1300P as PSU. I am using an Adata Legend 512 GB Nvme drive which I intend to install the OS on, when I am finally able to boot.

When I turn the system on, the BMC led keeps blinking, indefinetly. As far as I could find, this indicates that the board is configured for remote management, and it should be possible to revert it back to local management. Since I haven't done anything like this before, I couldn't quite figure out how to do it, that is why I am asking for help.

Any suggestions/guide on how to do it?

Thanks in advance

José Hugo

P.S.: My situation seems similar to to the user Slatts from a while ago. Also, I have already tried to clear CMOS with the jumper.

this is just i sign the ASPEED BMC chip has booted Firmware and is ready to operate. you can login the BMCWebGUI and check the LOGs, maybe you find a hint whats going on.

How do I log in the webgui? plug in the network?
yes to the dedicated BMC LAN port (manual)
you should get IP over DHCP(check your router)
https://<your-ip>
afaik default login username = root and password = superuser

CPU proper seated ? power supply ? both 8pin, enough Watts ? cooler ?
how long did you wait for POST ? can take minutes after power off and so many RAM.
try only one RDIMM (check manual which slot)

I also recently purchased an S8030. As part of my research I came across this Lenovo document on the subject of Memory Optimization to get a sense of recommended memory layouts. Given that the S8030 seems to take an eternity to boot, I ventured into setup with just 1 memory module (works, but "unbalanced") to minimize times between reboots.

Tyan and Supermicro take significantly less time to boot than Dell and HPE. And the IPMI consumes far less energy. I have a Tyan board that consumes 50w idle, the same cpu and chipset from HPE will consume 80w and take 2x ~ 3x longer to boot

I flashed the BIOS with a clip on programmer and it didn't change anything. I wasn't able to flash the BMC using the clip on style programmer. I think this was because I had to power the board in order for the programmer to not throw a overcurrent error since the chip's circuit powers other devices on the board. Because of this, the BMC was technically powered on reading from memory. This prevented me from flashing it. I don't have a soldering kit to be able to desolder a 16 pin chip so I decided to leave it. If flashing the BIOS didn't do anything, I don't think flashing the BMC will either since it's not needed to POST.

I unplugged everything and took the motherboard out of the case. I inspected it with a flashlight for the 10th time and I finally found what I think to be the culprit. There is a missing component on the motherboard. I can see the broken solder joints. It's near the CPU power delivery so I don't think the CPU is getting power. My guess is since EPYC uses a built in chipset (SoC), without CPU power, pretty much nothing happens outside of the BMC. I took a screenshot of the picture of the motherboard in the manual and circled the component that broke off. You can see in the picture of my motherboard where the component is clearly broken off and missing. Any idea what component broke off and its function? I can see it says R10 on it and there are multiple soldered on the board.

Hey all - closing the loop on this item. While this missing part on the motherboard may have contributed to the issue, I found out the main issue all along was my PSU. I measured the voltages with a multi-meter but it didn't occur to me the brand new PSU could have an issue under load. When I swapped to a different PSU, no issue occurred.

@RolloZ170, Thanks for your suggestions, I was caught with other priorities at work, so I didn't had the time to check everything.

but a preliminary answer:

1) I believe the CPU is properly seated, I followed closely the AMD video guide, used the proper screw for that, and I am using the appropriate cooler. I didn't try any shortcuts or workarounds. If you have any suggestion on how to verify that, it is fine for me.

2) It is a 80+ platinum 1300W PSU, both 8 pin connected, I believe it is more than enough watts. All the rating I verified beforehand suggested it was correct. It is not a server PSU, but is a high end desktop PSU.

3) At one time I waited around 10 min. Usually I waited less.

I will try one DIMM later

server boards with BMC need more standby wattage. PSU with old dry caps can give trouble.
but i think you are fine with yours secret vendor 80+ platinum 1300W.

Hi people, I'm back

I believe I left on for long enough this time, over one hour.
I connected the computer using the upper most port, which is a singled out port. The other ports are in pairs.
As I understand, the BMC port is the singled out port.
Checking the IP for the computer on the router, I tried to connect on the ip through the browser.

On firefox it simply didn't connect, on safari it gave the error below.

The blinking I mentioned continues.

I hope I am getting forward. Any suggestions?

@RolloZ170 , thanks for the tip on https://

Got here, which means that the motherboard powered up, which is should be good.

I don´t have an username and password, and using the password recovery says there is no email registred.

I suppose there is a default username and password, either universal or board specific.

as vvkvvk mentioned you can use ipmitool to reset PW, but this works only localy on that machine, not remote for security reasons.
