ya but he specificly writes that he got q20331g9 s10 model C3758R from Amazon, even though listing is for Q20332G9 (C3758)
I'm pretty sure that might've been a typo, but let's see what he says. :)

The Alibaba.com listing appears to be gone now unfortunately so I can't check what they offered there. On their website, they do indeed have the Q20331G9 S10 based on the C3758R though. That explains why I initially thought all the models had the R versions of the CPUs.

So they don't even go for dual-channel. Unless that has some form of latency advantage compared to dual-channel, I would expect two dimms to perform better. Perhaps not though.
My guess is that this is a cost-saving from producers but also saves a little bit of power from the wall.

Dual channel should be faster, and the big brothers of the 8200 in the rackmounted netgate units
does support dual channel ram

Yeah, that's certainly possible. Also, it might not actually matter when used as a router, so spending the extra money might not be justified.

Indeed that is most likely the case, I plan on using a single 16gb stick in mine :)

Interesting. For the old one they wrote i225/i226, but I don't know what they actually used in practice. I wouldn't be using the RJ45 ports anyway most likely, but still. :)

As long as the I225 is the b3 stepping no issues, I've been running my pfsense on the v2 of CWWK's N5105 4port i225 for a year without any issues

and I still need one for wan :)

@SlowmoDK The response I got from them about the Q20331G9 was that it is "out of stock". I asked them to confirm whether it will be restocked or whether it is actually discontinued.

EDIT: Their response regarding the Q20331G9 was:

"There are no production plans for this model at this time."

Ya I got : We only produce 3 models: Q20311G9_C3338R, Q20321G9_C3558R, Q20332G9_C3758.

nothing more...

But at least they promised to ship "soon" heh, and since they ship with DHL not aliexpress-shipping, hopefully it should take under a week to arrive

Have a nice weekend

Fair enough. At least we know that now.

I'm looking forward to hearing about your experience with it once it arrives. :)

The project that I was considering using one of these as a router for will be happening in roughly 6 months time at the earliest, if it happens at all.

You too! :)

Unit arrived today :) just in time for weekend fun hehe

Up and running in 10 min... figuring out port assignments took the longest.

installed pfsense ce and updated to plus ... restored backup from old device and then just re-assigning interfaces

no hickups whatsoever

with a noctua usb fan on top i can't get cores above 30c maxing out my current 1000/1000 connection

sfp+ works with both my dac cables and 10GBASE-T (RJ45)

I'll do some VPN testing when I get back to work monday

Have a great weekend all !!

I know that I will, as i also got 4 Intel D3-S4610 1.92TB SSDs for the NAS in the mail today ;)

Great!

Is the fan really needed? I would assume it would be able to handle it passively, at least when not using 10GBASE-T transceivers. :)

Properly not, but it was inplace from old pfsense box :)
it not audible, so why not

I'll do some time without fan over the weekend for testing

Operating temp is 50
CPU temp? Have a look at your SSD. With this CPU package temp my two DC1000B M.2 NVMe SSD got 76°C...
Ambient temp was 22°C. I use a slow spinning external USB fan to drop all temperatures by 10°C.

Code:

@SlowmoDK How did you install pfsense btw.? Did you have to use the VGA output or does it offer IPMI?

It would be good to know if I need to find an active VGA to HDMI/DisplayPort adapter.

Ya pfsense runs flawlessly so far ... i haven't seen much over 10% cpu usage and that's with heavy interlan routing

the aspeed 2400 is just for VGA output not IPMI..

so adapter or vga monitor needed ... luckily I keep one old LCD monitor just for that .. :)
