For anyone who wanted to rack mount their 7820 (or 5820) like I did, I would suggest just getting a shelf to put it on instead of going the official route.

The official route requires two different parts: Dell MT0MN Rack Conversion Kit, and Dell 0D2K5P Poweredge 3U Rail Kit. Neither of which seem to be sold by dells website any longer. They are on eBay, but combined are $160! ($79.99 each)

I had originally bought Dell 5Y77W rails from Dell directly for about $50, as it lists the Precision 5820, 7820, and 7920 Towers as compatible, but they are *NOT* compatible. The holes in the rails are too small for the screws provided by the conversion kit.

Yeah the service tag they sent me is for the machine I received, so it seems like a clear mix-up on their part.
In the end I decided to keep the 5280 because it had a W-2245 in it (a bit better than the older 2145) and I figured faster cores was better than more cores for my use case.

the seller gave me a partial refund as well.

I requested a 15% refund for my broken handle and it was sent without question. I've also loaded up the RAM to 12x16GB. Has anyone upgraded the CPUs in these? 2x 4110 -> 2x 6138 or similar?

CPU Upgrade went without issue. Use the latest BIOS. CPU 0 on my system tends to run about +10°C though

I upgraded to single socket 8259CL (210w Tdp) and I have to set the minimum fan to 40% in BIOS to make sure it's cool in the summer. For some reason I couldn't see the sensor temp status under ESXI 8.0.

Sucks that rack conversion kit is so expensive compared to the price of these things.

Any recommendations for sliding shelves to put this on that maintains its 4U height?

Impressive. I was tempted to try 8180s but 6138s are so much cheaper and I already can't make use of all the cores
I should also mention that I set the base fan speed to 25% in the BIOS. Maintains a steady flow at a perceptible but low noise level. I suspect, but cannot confirm, that you could get away with 205W CPU's (8180, etc.) without big heat issues if you set the base fan speed much higher, but I think over 75% you might want this thing in another room.

Any shelf will add to the 4U size, as the machine itself is exactly 4U in width. I personally did end up buying the official dell parts, even if they were expensive. My machine sits slightly too far to the left for some reason and rubs up against the side of the rack itself... but that may have something to do with me having a threaded-hole rack instead of the normal square hole server style.

What memory is confirmed working? Upgraded the processors to 2x6126 and even the original memory does not work in a four channel configuration. I thought 2666v would
work and it does work but only in a 2 channel per processor configuration. I have the same problem with 32gb 2666v sticks which work fine with the original silver processors at 2400 speeds.

I'm using
SKhynix HMA82GR7DJR8N-XN 16GB 2R×8 PC4-3200AA-RE2-12 DDR4 ECC RDIMM

all slots populated

defective 6126s or unproper CPU installation.
What do you know. It seems to be the processor. I swapped in the second processor and it works with 6 channels. The processor with only two channels working has a faint scratch on the lga pads, could be the cause. For the record, these 32gb are Micron, Dell part number TN78Y. Thanks for nudging me, was easier than I thought, just swapped the heatsinks including processors.
