I haven't tried but for a single cpu configuration i think its possible to do something non-dell; you will however need a custom bracket mount.
*you can use t7920 heatsinks in single cpu configuration. Knowing dell its custom mount. *but kinda looks like narrow ilm.
*if you plan on doing custom liquid loop you might be able to squeeze 2 heatsinks. *or find 1U one - they do exist - just make sure wiring/pipes won't get in your way

On the plus side, it's not like I'm jumping to the 200W TDP level... the 6234s are 130W, the 4110s are 85W. Last time I played with liquid cooling was when I had an Area51 ALX, and the CPU was a 975X, so it's been a while. We'll see how this goes, then I'll figure something out.

Other thing I'm considering is if I want to drop any of the Optane DCPMEM units in here. I've got 8x64GB right now for it, so I'm not hurting for memory, but reading a tech note on the 7920 says they don't support the DCPMEM units in "storage" mode, only memory mode. That's kind of a bummer, can anyone confirm otherwise?

Other note... 8x64GB 2133 memory out of some old HP Gen9 servers. Is it worth shelling out for some 2666/2933/3200 memory?

My understanding is that the speed of the main memory needs to match the speed of the optane dcpmem which should be the "A" series for the 7820 and that is 2666.

I have a similar upgrade for my T7820 - dual 6244 and optanes. I did not see the note on the 7920 and was in fact hoping to use it as storage. I am curious to see what you discover when you upgrade.

T7920 Works with DCPmem in Storage Mode but I don't know about the T7820
So I found this, see page 12. Maybe it's an earlier iteration document and something they added in the BIOS. Specifically:

RDIMM memory as cache— which is not included in overall memory capacity. Intel DCPMM is supported in memory mode only on the
Precision 7920 Tower and is not “Persistent” in memory mode.
Note: 2666MHz RDIMM memory used as cache in Optane DC Persistent Memory configs has transitioned to 3200MHz RDIMM
memory as part of an industry transition. However the 3200MHz memory will automatically clock down to a maximum of 2666MHz

Stuff probably won't show up until the end of next week, so nothing doing until then at least.
I haven't ordered any memory yet, was thinking I could just migrate these 64G-2133s over.... but if I do go down the Optane path, then I'm definitely going to have to get some faster memory.
