I just got to figure out what to buy to get 8ish SATA port's :)
Is that individual drives or a RAID set up?

I'm no IT expert but a M1015 raid card seems popular option.
You need to flash it to IT mode if you want to run individual (non-RAID) drives.

Hmm i guess individual at first since i want 1 drive for each server(games) and i might expand / close down servers so in and out with drives, ill solve the backup external at first, but the option to go indidual - raid would be great, will have a look at the M1015.

The board does have a Intel C600 chipset so there is 8 "ports" build into the board that can be changed with a "key" but how do i get the physical ports since there's 1-2 "special connectors"? :p

I'm no expert and it's really late and my brain is asleep, but if you have a look at SFF8087 cables they have one connector at one end and four leads at the other end to connect to hard drives. You need to make sure you using the right cable SFF8087 or SFF8088 etc and that they are 'forward breakout' (connector to hard drive) or 'reverse breakout' (connector to backplane).
How exactly does a SAS SFF-8087 breakout cable work? + RAID/connection questions

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone is familiar with this Intel MB: S2600GL
How does it compare to the
S2600CP2J?

Is it compatible with the E5-2670? I'm looking for a dual board. Already have my 2 2670 CPU's.. Thanks.
Intel Ark is your best friend (and the helpful people on this forum, of course):
ARK | Compare Intel® Products

I'm a relatively novice owner of a GL-version so don't take my answer as the absolute truth

Short answer:

The CP2J has a 12"x13" SSI EEB board form factor (as opposed to the GL which has a 16,5" x 16,5" Custom form factor). So it's going to be M-U-C-H easier to find a suitable case/chassis, PSU and fans for the CP2J.
The PCIe cards are also a "drop-in" in the CP2J (the GL-version needs the x24 riser cards).

Both MBs are happy with the E5-2670s (up to v2), though.

I'm 100% sure that I am more of a novice when it comes to server boards than you.
Thanks a lot for your input.
Much appreciated!

sounds like a plan! keep me in the loop on how you solve the fan connecting! and ill do the same!,

do you know what else i need except MB,PSU,CPU,RAM to get this thing started and running?
That looks pretty much like my shopping list too. Should be enough to at least get to play with the BIOS settings. Hopefully someone else can chime in if there's something obvious missing.

People who bought the P4000M chassis: don't touch the Nidec fan while it's moving. My left index finger is 1/8" shorter now than it was this morning.
Or, how about:

I learnt a lot from the great folks here on STH and spent a quite a bit of time researching in trying to come up to speed. This is my first server build.
In looking at alternatives for the Nidec fan I found only couple of options from San Ace with similar ratings for air flow, static pressure & rpm. They don't appear to be that silent either. 33 - 60 db. I can post the info once I get home later this evening.
The air flow sensor shows 80 cfm on Idle. What are folks seeing on full load. I still have the heatsinks that NATEX shipped. Need to get a longer #2 Phillips as the one I have isn't long enough to install the Intel ones from Kalleyomalley.

Hah I was just there last night. You need a really long screwdriver to hit those. I had to go buy a longer one as well.

Ouch that hurts!

I once bought a couple "tunnel" fans from Micro center at clearance for $1 each. Not aware that it could rotate at 10,000 rpm, I held it in my hand and attached the 12V power. I then touched the turning blades unintentionally. My finger was not shorter but had a deep cut that needed 2 stitches. 2 blades were also broken from the fan.

Later I found those were used in 1U unit. The one was made by Delta, and was actually a combination of two smaller fans together. The two had different lengths and blade pattern. Almost like a jet engine.

@johan antonsen. Re RAID card, I believe IBM M1015 is considered the card of choice for running non-raid (Individual) drives. There is an article on STH home page about it. Certainly you could get some more advise from others who are more knowledgeable than me. Cheers

So I ended up ordering Intel R2312GL4GS Server System 2U Rack, Socket R, New Bulk Packaging. They took a $325 offer. Now I need the rest of the parts. Is the SR0KX stepping the one to get? Can someone point me to RAM options? Is 16 x 8GB sticks that way to go? Is 8 x 16GB that much more expensive? ESXi pass through won't work on the onboard SATA for the VMs right? So I'll still need a couple of HBAs? Anything else I'm missing other than storage to complete this build?
