E5-2696 v4 (22 cores) under $200

from the xeon scalables we have learned there is another important CPU parameter TDC (thermal design current)
that prevents motherboards from working with some OEM CPU.
the ME/SPS compares the capability of the VRM section with the TDC value of the CPU, if the TDC is higher than the CPU won't start.
note in this case no x86 code is executed - CPU conf. registers are accessed by DMI.

i.e. the E5-2687Wv4 has a TDP of 160W and a TDC of 189A (Amps)
the E5-2696 V4 has a TDP of 150W but a TDC of 199A
this barrier can be cleared by a VRM modd. like we do on LGA3647 boards.

The single thread performance will probably feel exactly the same. I really can't notice 100 difference on passmark on the single thread when using a system. but what would be noticeable would be those 4 extra cores on the 2699, so I'd say in a highly multithreaded workload, the 2699 would definitely show a little more speed.

Mine were from ccnytech on ebay. I found it by searching for the 2680's sSpec, SR2N7, which the listing correctly included.

I could even run the 4669v3 with all 18-cores/38-threads at 2.9GHz for non-avx workload on my X99m killer with BIOS hack.

I also noticed other parts dropping in price last few months. The cheapest 2680 v4's are close to $80 now.

2680 v4 has been quite a bit overpriced and needing a drop for a while now.
The higher 2683 v4 has been at 65-80$ since atleast october while 2680 has been sitting at its former pricing.

had a E5-2687W V4 QK99 160W working on a X99M Killer.
the TDC is the limit. 189A works, 199A not.

Keeping my eyes on the 2699v4 for sure.

Got one last week for $150. It was OBO on eBay, but decided not to take chance of loosing it. Best price I have seen since $100 in Jan 2021.

It's not too late. Next week will be the end of the quarter / fiscal year. Some sellers will want to window dress financials and might take lower offers. Crypto miners are selling out and further driving down prices, even on GPUs that haven't been abused. Should be a good time to get deals on decent parts if you can find a trustworthy seller. There are at least a few serious sellers with lots of E5-2696 v4 stock. I'd bet one of them will be willing to take less than $200 next week.

That is tempting. But what system would I put it in? I have had bad luck with the Chinese "X99" boards, and I passed on that Dell PowerEdge barebone deal that came through a while ago.

If sticking with this generation, the Asus X99 stuff is about as good as you can get, I can confirm the X99_WS IPMI works fine with this cpu. not to self promote(sold 100+ ) but you can find them on ebay in the ~$200 range, high compared to the Chinese x99 but much higher quality.,

Not sure, but if I had a guess that is correct. The core market for the X99 chipset wasn't server CPU's that was just a nice bonus (like the even older x79) but the X299 dropped that sadly and pushed the limited selection of CPUS.
