cuba4sale is unable to recommend a compatible motherboard.

go figured. he didn't test it out himself ;(... so we still have no clear answer. The only way to confirm the MB incompatibility is to have the same set of cpu not working on s2600 but does work on another MB...

Does anyone know where suddenly all of these OEM E5-2696 v2 CPUs come from? Maybe similar to some big client like Facebook and their E5-2670 flood?

Its all depends on your wrkload if they use more threads or less thread. The 2696 has the highest total computational power if your work is highly multithread. if its low thread like only up to 4 threads the 2667 would be a little faster. I myself like 2696

Maybe it's a good idea to put together a list of known working boards or branded servers that work with E5-2696v2. The fact that the CPU doesn't appear on Intel's ARK makes me question the compatibility of these processors.

Update 1

Received a pair unknown condition E5-2696 v2 CPU for testing from fellow member AT

Looks like one CPU is bad , one CPU is working in Supermicro X9DRL-EF , bios X9DRL75_116
Just booted up one cpu , running memtest86 now. Will let it run 15min each time

I also have many models Intel S2600 boards. Will test it for you.
I have few Tyan boards as well

Boot Window 8.1 with the good CPU.
Took screen capture of CPUZ and HWinfo
Running a quick 10min Prime95 test.

Then re-test the ??? CPU

I guess the only way to ensure that is to test that "bad" one out more extensively. But first, for the "good" cpu, please test it next on the s2600cp. There's like a ton of us waiting for that result.. the suspense is quite unbearable...lol...

Then i guess you can plug the "bad" one in a few more boards. but i am guessing it's bad anyway and will stay bad

I have to establish a working baseline.
Next step is take apart my working Intel S2600 , not quite sure exactly systemboard model.

Not so good news for Intel S2600CP.

Remove my E5-2630 v2 from working Intel S2600CP system.

Inserted 1 good E5-2696 v2 , no boot logo.
Put back my E5-2630 v2 CPU , booted ok.

I am going flash the BIOS to the latest bios.

so definitely one bad cpu.

i use generic cooler on my s2600 set up and it is a pain to take off too...

No , I kept the ??? bad CPU in the SuperMicro board socket , just so I won't confuse myself.

So disappointed at intel! ;( guess now my upgrade path for v2 has become significantly more limited. the only 12 cores then would be 2697 and 2695 v2 on the compatibility list. ;(... don't even know if can even chance e5-4xxx v2 parts... ;( sad since 2696 v2 looks to be the best bargain right now.

Marsh, any more updates or interesting observation? Packed my cpu and it's in the mail back to seller asap tomorrow. will use that money toward another 2686 v3 cpu...

I have a feeling 2695 and 2697 v2 will never be quite bargain ...
