What is the compatibility story of this optane dimm? I plugged this into my intel gold 6148 based system and system didn't boot up. What am I missing?

Only Cascade Lake is supported (Xeon X2XX). NOT Skylake (Xeon X1XX), as mentioned several times.

I kind of read about it but I was hoping for the best.

How can this happen? Did intel break compatibility Within one generation? This is quite weird.

It's not breaking compatibility, because Cascade Lake came AFTER Skylake ;)

As far as I know, it was planned to release Optane DCPMM with Skylake and the foundations were there, but somehow there were silicon bugs

There's no point to list CPU's it does not work on, there are MANY MANY more of those than what it does work on.

Do you have Scaleable XEON Gen2? or Gen3? If YES, check these lists.
If NO, you're out of luck, they do not work.

I have an Intel Xeon Gold 6254 cascade lake CPU, but will this work in a Supermicro X11SPI-TF motherboard?

Is there a reverse list where we can find the compatible Optane series for a given cpu?

Never ever touched ESXi. Can't speak for it. Using them as read cache and vm storage for ZFS under GlusterFS and for testing as Intel CAS cache under MooseFS and BeeGeeFS. It's convenient to have an Optane drive just sitting in Ram slots I would not use otherwise without being forced to use pci adapter with extra cabling or expansive N-backplanes. Could also think of db storage, vm storage or any other storage. Know someone using them as temp scratch drive. But someone needs to be aware that these are in the most performant mode set up as 'interleave' which is kind of Raid0. But even as 'not-interleave' performance is superior in 99% use case excluding NVDimm-N not set up as simple block device.

Edit: Just forgot to use them as cheap additional ram. Where do u get 512GB ram for ~100EUR? But then I would recommend min 256GB ram already installed at minimum.
