a noob question: is it possible to have tmp- files on hdd when i am plotting ?
Chia Gui does not limit anything, so it will put temp files where ever you tell it to.

I would not suggest to run multiple plots on a spinner as that will take ages since its not made for may IOPS, but many small HDDs work quite well. I have a bunch of 10k 2.5" in one of my plotter boxes where I do 1 plot per disk (raid0 array) and that works quite well. Probably not the fastest plotter out there, but very good density.

I'd just look at the big NAS systems (Freenas, Unraid, OMV, maybe XPEnology) and their build recommendations or user build descriptions - that should give you plenty of HW ideas:)
I don't think I saw bunch of 12+ bays desktop builds though. Do you mind shedding some light?

I did watch the NAS build from LTT and that's why I went to FD D7/M2. I've see Node 304/804 but I didn't like the design. I've also checked CS/DS380 but not a fan of that. And then everything else seems to be on the rackmount side, CSE846/847 and Rosewill-ish. Another options is to go vertical mount Supermicro storage servers or 45 drives, but those are too expensive.

Ah didnt see that - 12+ bays is indeed quite rare as the available non-rack cases are basically unicorns...

Going to be 'out of space' today with Chia update 1.1.6 lowering the temp file size to max 207 GiB and increasing CPU usage between 63-80% now. Plotting time reduced by 40-50min per plot

If 'out-of-space' ... what's next? Still ZERO ...
This explains the major jump in the growth. All flash plotters are getting much better yields now.

There goes my advantage of using 15k 2.5 sas drives.

I guess if you go with Chia GUI light theme your advantage comes back ;)

So whats your total size and when did you start?
Just trying to compare to my situation - I started around March 25th (took 3 days to sync or so) and am at 1100 plots now;
my first win was on May 5th with 190 plots (@ 2.2 EiB netspace and ~1m projected win time) so pretty lucky i guess

I started exactly 1 month ago on March 22nd. Had read about Chia 2 years ago and promised myself I would keep checking back in on it. That didn't happen of course so it has been a mad rush the last month to source drives and plotting hardware. Just broke 400TB of plots and a 1/3 of the way to plotting all my drives. I got some good advice for building out plotting rigs from another member on here and am cranking out about 50TB a day with a mix of different systems and strategies. I've been pretty lucky, also. I mined my first two blocks with less than 150TB in and have been ahead of EV ever since. *fingers crossed*

Woke up this morning , found 2 xch with 800 plots.

Started about 10 days ago. I made a lot mistakes, learn along the way.

I didn't spent new money on equipment for farming.
Only new purchase is 2 x 14TB drive , $175 each
I would have purchased drives anyway because it is cheaper than Black Friday deal.

I already own 400TB disk space, ( 300TB backup (99% media files) + 100TB unused ),

I used unused 100TB for farming.

Now, I am diverting 100TB disk space for farming, left with 200TB backup.

I retired lots of 4 TB and 3 TB drives, time to put the old drives back to work as backup storage.

I recently built out a nice truenas server running proxmox with 12 12TB drives, about half free but I haven't used any of it. What 100TB of media did you end up 'diverting' to the chia gods? Maybe we should do a group buy.. I have a line on 1.5 PB of drives for 13.5K

What size drives are these? Could participate via a forwarder for that price if its not like 1000 1.5T Sata drives ;)

Depending on the cost and build quality. With that amount of drives, we should have (1) buffering material between drives and chassis, and (2) some fans slowly blowing air through the drives. And of course better if I don't have to sneak under the case to screw the drive screws. Should also be able to add a HBA card somewhere, maybe through PCIe extension cable.

My 2¢.

i am also in for this. keep us informed about the specs of drive's
