Any updates on the build...working on something similiar but I only have 2 cameras. Thinking Unraid or AIO with FreeNAS. Ideally, would like to run my Blue Iris NVR VM, and a UBNT Wireless controller VM along with File Serving Duty to replace my PX6-400d.

Motherboard: SuperMicro X10SLL-F
RAM: 32GB DDR3-1600 R-ECC
AOC: Intel X520/LSI 9211-8i
Spinners: 6x Seagate Enterprise 4TB (Raid Z2)
SSD: 2 x Samsung 843T 480GB Cache/300GB Intel S3500 VM OS
Case: Unsure maybe iStarUSA EX2M8 or if the Trayless 12Bay stock comes in and prices come down so I have room for expansion
PSU: iStarUSA IS-460R2UP
OS: Unraid or ESXi
CPU:Intel Xeon 1230V3

Ironically I have the SM x10, 32gb UDIMM ECC, and that 1230V3 on my bench as my 'test station' for various configs, os, raid, etc... I'm running 2x M1015 in it + onboard wired up to 12 hot-swap (8x2.5, 4x.3.5) and the other M1015 hookup for SAS drive testing... if you have any questions about performance/usage with that let me know I have win10, linux and maybe if I can find it a win7 disk I can run something on it for ya.

I pulled out my existing SM x10 E5 'tower' and have been playing around with the CPU I had in there before (10 Core @ 3Ghz), today I'll yank it and put in the 12 Core, and see how it works :) I have it in a cheap tower case with one of those huge 300m or whatever monster silent fans... This motherboard has the built-in 12Gb/s HBA too, so I may swap to my other 1P E5 board if I can find it, it's in a pile of racks/towers/chassis waiting for software to deploy into the real world :D

I loaned out my 2.5" Intel 750 400GB to another member and it should be back here by end of week, I got the other 2.5" 750 from @BlueFox Saturday so I'm ready to go for the drives :) I do think I am 1, WD RED 4TB drive short though so I may have to order one up quick to finish the storage array.

Here's some quick pics.

Corsair 550M.
SuperMicro 4U Active HSF
Industrial Noctua Fan (loudest thing in here, getting removed -- SM doesn't like it)
inside.jpg
Huge fan on the front moves enough air to keep P3700 NVME cool during test so keeps the rest cool with no NVME or heaters in there.
I still need to add the hot-swap caddy to the front, but it also has I believe 4 or so tray/screwless inside + 1 or 2 hard mount for 3.5" and some 2.5" too.

One of my favorite features of this cheap case...
Hot swap 2.5" and 3.5" caddy on the top! Perfect for a file storage server to move data-in-out without trays!

One idea for you might be to get a board with onboard LSI/ 10Gb. It will end up being cheaper than using AOCs unless you already have the AOCs.

This is hardware I already have with the exception of the spindles and the case/ps.

This is the case I want but don't see it in my future....

That is a very nice looking case. I really like iStarUSA's offerings. If they ditched the optical drive slot and put 2 more 2.5" bays that would be PERFECT for my new storage server build.

EDIT: I guess this would work but 4U is pushing it for my space constaints.

For that $ I would splash out on a passive cooled high quality case in preference.

Agreed...that's why I don't see that case in my future....now if it had the redundant PS then yeah...but the redundant PS is almost as expensive, by the time your done your all in for over $1k which is ridiculous.

How very retro of you @T_Minus :-D

So that AIO monsta' did not work out for you? DAMN, I must be a gluten for punishment running x's 3 2011v1 systems. Seems funny to me w/ all the legit HW you have to be backing off to this type of build...kinda like you picked up the scraps and pieces and said 'LET'S DO THIS!' HAH j/k nice 'thinking outside the box' if $ was not an option I'd just go w/ that new sweet SM Xeon-D platform that's gonna cost $2K :-D That thing is a BEAST!

I ain't gonna lie...any of these iStar chassis make me cringe, for that $ why not get a proven/solid chassis from a reputable manufacturer (yeah I said it) lol

The ones I was thinking of have a 19" rack option I think but can't see that would work so well passive.
$700 is a lot for a case.
It certainly is.

Who do you recommend other than SuperMicro?
