Worked for me (truncate to 1MB then force with hdparm --fwdownload) but shows 256 reallocated sectors afterward.

I am not a Linux user, but I could figure out the steps. Is it worth it? There were drives a while back that when they hit a certain# of Power On Hours, would fail. Were the SM863 part of that?

After reading the info in the links, I guess I am going to be playing with Linux. No way to update it from Windows, correct?

Not that I know of. I just live-booted Finnix using a Ventoy USB drive that had an extra partition that I could mount, e.g. `mount /dev/sdb3 /mnt`
