Here's the configuration I came up (with the great help from users of this forum) as a replacement for my HP DL380e 2xE5-2450L, 70GB RAM & P420 6x4TB RAID6:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 5900X with Dynatron A24
MOBO: ASRock X470D4U
MEMORY: 4 x Samsung DDR4 32GB/PC3200/ECC/UB/ (2Rx8) M391A4G43AB1-CWE
CASE: SuperMicro CSE-825TQC-R802LPB

I'm planning to populate the:
- M.2 slots with 2x WD Red SN700 2TB for fast storage
- Asmedia 1061 with 2x Samsung PM893 240GB (MZ7L3240HCHQ-00A07) for OS
- the "main" SATA controller with 3x Seagate IronWolf 8TB (ST8000VN004) in RAID-Z1 for slow storage (with regular backups to the DL380e which will become a Proxmox Backup Server)

I'll also put in a A380 GPU to be used for video transcoding.

I plan to run Proxmox with 3 VMs on this:
- OMV for NAS
- Ubuntu with dockerized Nextcloud, GPU will be passed-through to it
- Ubuntu with various Docker services (~45 at this moment, including Minecraft, Valheim and Satisfactory servers)

I planned to use qcow2 disks for Nextcloud and Docker, and a pass-through for the Seagate drives for OMV (although, I'm wondering if it would be better to migrate the Nextcloud & Docker into LXC, so I could split the GPU between them and have transcoding on both Nextcloud and Jellyfin/Plex on the Docker host).

With this build, I would expect a much better performance, especially in the game servers and less power draw (the DL380e I currently have draws ~133W from the wall)

I would appreciate any feedback on the above - if there any kind of pitfall I'm leading myself into?

asrock boards have proven themselves finicky when using full feature sets, be prepared for virtualization to not work quite right and do not plan on using bifurcation. gpu passthrough as a full device should work fine... It sounds like you were barely loading the DL380e, this rig might use more power as configured because your low threaded workloads will be using a higher percentage of the cpu, but at much higher clocks/ipc.

I've stumbled upon some posts about this mobo, then I read about the AMD c-states issues on Linux and now I've started to reconsider this setup...

note1) that you may need to upgrade bios before 5000 series cpu's work on x470 board.
note2) That supermicro chassis is only halfsized pcie slot (low profile pcie). You won't be able to close the case with full sized gpu. (Only gpu's like A2000 rtx2000 ada will fit in there)
