Other thing is, the 9212-4i/4e has one 4x SFF-8088 external SAS port and 4x internal SATA ports, the 9210 has a SFF-8087 intenal connector
I'm quite intrigued now

PLX bridge chipset is pretty much industry standard. You do know most cards support SR-IOV and some do MR-IOV? No drivers for SR-IOV :(

Just a heads up, i purchased a H222 based on this information and its apparently SAS2308 based! Not really complaining about pcie 3.0 bandwidth but you have it filed under SAS2008. Hope it works ok with ZFS!

Just a heads up, i purchased a H222 based on this information and its apparently SAS2308 based! Not really complaining about pcie 3.0 bandwidth but you have it filed under SAS2008. Hope it works ok with ZFS!

I know that it's an LSI 2308, but have you confirmed the PCIe3 part yourself? My understanding is that the card is 2308 but PCIe2 - like the LSI 9205.

does the controller really make this big of a difference with hard drives?? Given that sas2008 is sata 6gbps, i would not think 4x RE 2TBs would saturate it. I imported my pool and ran a bench with the new 2308 controller and there is no way this can be right:


I was under the assumption that the gains from the 2308 controller were marginal at best unless you were running SSDs...

The performance difference between LSI 9200 (SAS2008) and a 9205 (SAS2308) is very small for most use cases - both are limited by the PCIe2 bus. Your results are very odd, and likely show the effects of caching more than anything else. There is no way that any four drives, much less any PCIe2 x8 card, will give you 6GB/s.

whoops, my bad- looks like i left sync on during the slow benchmark! Here are the updated results, as expected almost no difference in performance between the two cards with a simple 4 HD setup.
