So a 9400-16e is an HBA 16 external in "it mode" already?
The 9400-16e is an HBA with no RAID functionality. Search the PDF for "RAID" and you'll see it isn't mentioned.

There is no "IT mode" for the 9400. That was a name given to the ability to downgrade a card that had limited RAID functionality to one with no RAID functionality. The 94xx and 95xx come in either HBA (no RAID) or RAID, and you can't change the functionality by flashing firmware.

Not where I'm supposed to be

So if I purchased a 9400-16e and put it in my system it should connect to a DIY DAS and let me use a bunch of disks in a Linux based system? no software tomfoolery (assuming correct cables and ports are used for connecting everything)? sorry if I'm repeating myself just trying to be sure I understand as this side of things is new to me and there is so much information across so many forum posts and videos and model numbers (that all seem to be the same standard for the number but are not).

it needs to be the 8i or 8-lane version of the SFF-8654. There's also a 4i or 4-lane version of that connector and that's not what the 9500-8i has.

But yes, the usual SAS cables with the right connectors will work fine for SAS and SATA devices.

@kryten @BLinux:

Did I understood it correct? With my Version (Fujitsu / LSI SAS9200-8e ) of the controller I can connect SAS and SATA Devices?
I would buy me an external JBod but I don't know which one is compatible with the server.
Can you give me a Tipp?

Here’s a question not deserving of a topic of its own.

Do SAS controllers support optical drives with the same breakout cables you’d use for SATA hard disks? In particular, the LSI SAS 9211-8i? How about the LSI MegaRaid 9280-24i4e? I wonder about this due to the increasing lack of SATA on motherboards these days. One day soon I might need to plug every SATA device into my SAS cards lol.

Hi folks, I've spent an interesting evening researching firmware for a pair of 9500-8e Tri Mode HBA cards I picked up earlier this week from a refurbisher. They are silkscreened as Broadcom 9500-8e but storcli64 reports them as having SubVendor Id 0x1414 / SubDevice Id = 0x4080 which the AI monkey tells me is a Microsoft OEM card - possibly pulled from Azure hardware.

Linux drivers are reporting it as Broadcom / LSI Fusion-MPT 12GSAS/PCIe Secure SAS38xx and firmware is at:

FW Package Build = 23.00.00.00
FW Version = 23.00.00.00
NVDATA Version = 23.00.00.14
Driver Name = mpt3sas
Driver Version = 51.100.00.00

I tried updating to P36 but that fails with "The firmware flash image is invalid".

I'll find out tomorrow when my IOM6 modules are delivered if these cards see my NetApp 4246 JBOD disks but thought it was an interesting experience to share.

Tip for new players: when buying cards look for ones that ship in a Broadcom-branded brown box and usually includes both full-height & low-profile brackets and product labels and listings calling out P/N “05-50075-01” for the retail kit. My cards have no such part numbers.

The good news is that the 9500-8e Tri Mode card should work just fine with JBOD in ProxMox & TrueNAS without needing to flash "IT" mode (hence Tri-Mode).

For the love of all things this rabbit hole keeps getting deeper - turns out every AI monkey system I searched on was wrong, my IOM6 is NOT a pair of SFF-8088 connectors, rather, yet another form factor of cable I've never heard of - QSFP(SFF-8436) and, guess what, almost nobody makes SFF-8436 to SFF-8644 cables (that I can get a hold of quickly anyway)!?! so my pair of 9500-8e cards may as well be boat anchors along with the FAS25xx modules.:rolleyes::oops:

So I've fired off yet another round of parts-cannon money and ordered a pair of SFF-8436 to SFF-8088 cables and an LSI-9207-8e card that, fingers crossed, will reach me on Tuesday.
