I didn't read the release notes but Intel hopefully fixed the issue some where between TA recommended FW 02.02.0002 and the current FW 02.06.0002.
Doesn't look too promising for the V1 family. The TA offers a solution for the V2 family in the form of a new BIOS option they call Processor PCIe Link Speed:

"By default, the installed PCIe* 3.0 adapters will run at their maximum native speed, but may be limited to PCIe* 2.0 speeds if desired"

Err, does this mean the can be forced to 3.0 speeds if desired  ?

For the V1 family no such BIOS option is displayed:

"...the BIOS will limit the PCIe slots speed to PCIe* 2.0
speeds unless the add-in adapters have been tested for robust operation at PCIe 3.0 speeds
..."

Which probably translates to: not on the list = no 3.0...

Just wanted to post a bit of a gotcha concerning the Intel server boards with E5-2670 v1 chips. Unless your PCIe cards are on this list. They will run at PCIe 2.0 instead of 3.0 because of this bug.
Thanks for the "heads-up". This is something that's always nicer to find out before shopping...

SHIT! ...they just accepted a $300 offer on Intel R2312GL4GS Server System 2U Rack, Socket R, New Bulk Packaging

...this forces my hand on building another dual 2670 box... why did they do this to me?! :)
I tried the P4216IP4LHJC monster with dual 1200 unit for 275/350 they countered with 700/625.
I don't need another but had they accepted, I would have been in the same boat.

What I actually need now is an inexpensive 18-24u server rack so I can start organizing my messy home office. They seem to be as expensive as full size ones even before shipping.

Yeah, I was looking at the P4216IP4LHKC Intel P4216IP4LHKC Server System 4U, Socket R, 1600W New
and I suspect that they might have been in the $300+ range. I don't know why they valued that P4216IP4LHJC so much higher...

The only difference that I see:
P4216IP4LHJC : 2x1200watt PS
P4216IP4LHKC : 2x1600wattPS and this comes with the RMS25CB080 mezzanine RAID card

Did you haggle or simply present a $300 BO and they accepted?

Looks like they are doing the counter-offering all day! Must be fun!
I haggled; initially offered $250, they countered with $325, and I re-countered with $300 which they accepted.

Keep an eye out on Craigslist for server racks. The resale market for them is relatively non-existent. The smaller racks are usually more expensive than the full ones. You'll see 42U's for $150 regularly; sometimes as low as $100. The 24U's are more desirable for home labs, so you'll see those in the $200-300 range. I saw some 48U's going for $75 awhile back, but those won't wheel comfortably through a standard door, so I had to pass.

I am getting at least slightly jealous. Nice find!
I think we should hold you partly responsible for my new found compulsion; if it weren't for you spotting these e5-2670's (and this great forum), I'd be spending a lot more money on my 1970 Moto Guzzi rehabilitation project :) Well, lots of money will get spent *there* regardless...

So I screwed up and bought an RMM4R, the direct board mounted version of RMM4. It came with RMM4Lite which I can use, but the NIC module has no pin header for the cable, only a dual-row gold-finger contact connector on the same side of the board as the RJ45 port. Is there any way to get this to work with my S2600CP?

Do you have a specific *need* for a BMC dedicated RMM nic? If not, you can still certainly use the RMM4Lite module which will unlock the 'Advanced' BMC features (which consist of the iKVM (which is what most people care about), and Remote USB Media Redirection), over one of the two baseboard NICs. All the other BMC/IPMI features are available *without* the RMM4Lite module.

The tiny key is all I'm using. Separate NIC is a nice to have rather than a necessity, at least for me. I did not get the ribbon cable and the mounting bracket. So the NIC is just sitting in its package.
