I have 3 servers that I want connected via 10g. I have a switch with 2 SFP+ ports. I'm one port short. What's the cheapest way to gain an extra port?

Sell existing switch and get a suitable 4 port SFP+ switch w/ 24-48 GbE ports. Some models of consideration might be:

Cisco-sg500x
Juniper EX3300
HP A5800

Some active links:

Cisco SG500X 10 gb SFP+ 24 port gigabit gbps managed switch SG500X-24-K9

Juniper EX3300-24T 24-port 10/100/1000BaseT 4 SFP+ 1/10G Uplink Ports

JG257A HP 5800-48G-POE+ 48-Port Gigabit Managed L3 Switch usz

I JUST did this a week or so ago and made out like a bandit ($400 plus in pocket and got a new 10G switch w/ same capabilities/10GbE port density in my case, just liked the 10G ports on front). The fact that my add-on 10G modules were selling for ridiculous $ helped so I even got to keep my Procurve 2910al switch (just GigE now though since I gutted 10G modules) :-D

EDIT: While I don't currently have my magic crystal ball it would be helpful to know what type of switch you currently have so we can spec if we can add or it has the capability to add more 10G modules. Assuming it doesn't or you already explored those avenues so let's just say IF you had a LB4M or microtick w/ 2 10Gbe ports you could get another as well and link them w/ one 10g port in trunk mode and use the other for 3rd host 10G connectivity...may be cheaper than sell/buy switch w/ 4 10G ports on it but you lose a port so if you are ever thinking of adding a 4th host better take sell/buy route,

Food for tought/something to think over/about.

How many servers other servers?

if ONLY 3 servers then directly connect w/o switch (see below)
big team of 1gb ports 2 x 4 port carts = $100
switch with more 10gb ports under $800

or
this card on ebay could allow you to have point to point access 671798-001 666172-001 HP 10GB MELLANOX CONNECTX-2 PCIe 10GBe ETHERNET NIC

then you set up one with a VM + routing

$100
Hello nightmare (but thanks for creative suggestion)...went down this path...won't re-live it...get a 'proper switch' and be done w/ it! Here ye here ye who agrees? Bet I get a few votes :-D

EDIT:
I guess for sake of argument that is the 'cheapest route' if you don't mind headaches/nightmarish topologies/fabrics to manage...even if you do implement it cleanly good luck scaling it much more w/out losing your mind wink wink

You also might want to take a look at the Netgear S3300-28X. One of the ports would have to be copper -- thats one one limitation with this 4 x 10GB switch.

It did occur to me to build my own switch, I have an abundance of Chelsio NICs. But I read somewhere that the performance could never be as good as a store bought switch.

Yep, hard to have a go at good purpose built ASICS v.s. HW w/ SW routing/switching/constructs and expect it to be quite up to snuff...a good science experiment YES, for PRD not quite yet from what I have gathered in others valiant attempts here and in other communities.

Yap. Planning to build sw switch and backed off..
I know vyos can do most.
Simple bridge among nic are the easy way to create sw switch.

Love to find switch that support open network Linux onl.

I would recommend that you look at getting a separate 10GB switch. even though you need just 1 more port. it is addictive. and you may be better served getting a 10 GB switch linked (trunked) to a different switch for your slower clients.

A perfect switch for me at home would have 16 * 1GB ports. and 8 * 10GB ports and 4 * 40GB ports...
