My point, IBM were the leaders in Enterprise drives, probably every patent for new HDD technology came from IBM.
IBM employees started many other HDD companies, but in the end non exist now. Seagate I think also started from IBM (don't quite me)
Hitachi, now play catchup and like sheep bring out drives behind everybody else.
Hitachi do make great drives, they are no longer the leaders in the HDD arena, I assume they must be loosing big server contracts to Seagate and WD

R&D is what I think killed Hitachi HDD's, forking out royalties to everybody but your self will get you in the end.
I had (still have in a junk box somewhere) a Deathstar model and it behaved for me till it got retired due size.

Seagate had huge FW issues with their desktop HDD's, but I would buy a Constellation any day.
WD always made great Desktop HDD's, but never anything SCSI, now they are catching up with RE4's but probably need Hitachi to compete with Seagate.

Anywho, I loved the old IBM's, owned a ton of them.

Unfortunately, no. I contacted Hitachi several times, no reply... It seems that they don't like to give firmware anymore, as they used to...
I'd be very interested in the 5C0 firmware for the 7K3000 2 TB HDD.

It's a pitty that WD bought them... it's the end of cheap RAID.
I heard bad things about WD drives and hardware raid, but what about software raid like system with FreeBSD/ZFS/RaidZ, would WD drives still have issues there?

Probably no issues in software RAID. The issue for WD drives is the price, at this point in time....

@kryptex, thanks again for the firmware for the 5k3000, i just had some time on the weekend to finish the server build and flashed the 8x 5k3000, at first i got worried cause i was using the first Sata II port, but the flashing was coming unsuccessful, but upon checking the message said slave drive.... so went with the sata III port 0 and work like a charm, flashed all disk individually (took like 20mins to do all), then connected to the SASUC8i and slow formatted all drives, no issues so far running 5C0.

The only thing that doesnt work is that i cant see smart attributes with the drives plugged to the SASUC8i, but not a big deal.

FW same for 2TB and 3 TB 5K3000?

I see a link for 5C0 FW for 2 TB 5K3000, thanks Kryptex. Does anybody know if this is the same FW for the 3 TB 5K3000, 0S03230, HDS5C3030ALA630.

Currently have 580 FW, which sounds similar to the 2 TB models.

If not, does anybody know where to get the updated 3 TB FW without begging Hitachi, perhaps to no avail?

The link is ONLY for the 2 TB version of 5K3000 drive. Unfortunately, no sign of other 5K3000 or 7K3000 FW out there.... Not yet...

Hitachi firmware won't update

I have tried to update the firmware on my Hitachi HDS723030ALA640 (7k3000 3tb 7200 rpm) drives and Hitachi's Hi-Test updating program wont detect the drives nor will it detect the drives in their DOS program. I had to install a fresh copy of XP on a desktop because Hi-test wont work on Vista or 7 and that didnt work.

I was able to detect some 7k3000 2tb 7200 rpm drives in DOS by hooking them up do a desktop but not the 3tb. The DOS program wouldnt detect the drive via e-sata...only sata.

Has anyone been able to update their 3tb Hitachi drives?

Do you have the firmware for the 2TB 7K3000 series?
HDS723020BLA642 ?

I have a problem where 3 out of my 5 drives report a UDMA 5 mode instead of the maximum of UDMA 6.

I tried booting my PC with the Hitachi feature tools ISO and that software won't detect my HD's ?

Thanks!

Yes...I have firmware 800 for both 2tb 7k3000 and 3tb 7k3000. I do need someone to check and see if they can update their 3tb drives as I cannot.

Thanks for the uploads planetbrian!

I tried to run the update buy I'm running a 64-bit OS and didn't get far.
I don't have a floppy but I'm gonna make a bootable usb drive over the weekend and try this again.

Maybe I'll install XP to a different drive and go about it that way!

It seems that the first file, 0F12115_800_dos.zip is for P/N 0F12115 (7K3000 @ 2TB, model HDS723020BLA642), firmware version 800, DOS update. I'll give it a try on 3 of my 7K3000 @ 2TB drives (2 of them are now at firmware 580 and one is at 5C0)

The second file, 0f12450_800.zip is for P/N 0F12450 (7K3000 @ 3 TB), firmware version 800, HiTest update under Windows (32 bit only). I don't have a 7K3000 @3TB drive at this moment to try to update it. However, if you go back in this thread a few posts back, there was an explanation on how to use the HiTest firmware updater for Windows (it seems to work only under XP 32bit and probably Vista 32bit).

I haven't had the time to update yet. Did anyone update a 7K3000 drive to Firmware 800 yet ? If so, some details of the process and results/performance are welcomed.
