So I've been researching things, and well I haven't seen a lot of the 5k3000 drives around - but im seeing this one
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822145493

Is this same drive? or a replacement? It has a different model number, but it is a coolspin?
Brand
HITACHI
Series
Deskstar
Model
0S03230

edit:
Im guessing based on this:
http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=56229
that these are all the same??? does anyone know for sure?
I just bought 5 a few weeks ago. 3 of them were DOA, but that's another story. They were dropped so hard that the chassis screws perforated the anti-static bag. WTF?

They're 5k3000 coolspins. Same model no. HDS5C3030ALA630 to be exact.

I'm about to use 12 5k3000 in a hardware RAID 6 on a areca 1800ix 24 controller. 10 drives have firmware 5C0, and 2 have 580 and i have UltraDMA CRC errors on that 2 drives :-(. I really need the 5C0 firmware if anyone have it please.

erixon: if you could let us know how it goes.... it would be appreciated..

By the way check the 3rd post in this thread, A lot of people have been successful, emailing hitachi support to get the firmware.

Im about to install 8x Hitachi 5k3000 HDS5C3020ALA632 (0F12117), some have FW580 and others FW180, before i installed them i wanted to flash them all to the same firmware, from this thread seems to be 5C0, i have wrote to hitachi but havent answered back, so in case someone here still has the FW for the Hitachi 5k3000, i would be very grateful.

Here you will find the 5C0 firmware (DOS-based) for the Hitachi 5k3000@2TB drive, model HDS5C3020ALA632 (0F12117):
http://ifile.it/cwf84mh
If asked for firmware version, use 5C0;for the file type, use BD.

Keep us informed.

Thanks kryptex, ill start flashing the hdds tomorrow, btw the files from the zip on a DOS USB bootable, boot from USB, and just run MLDLBRD.exe file, if promted what firmware, ill chose 5C0 right?

Another question, do i have to initilize the disks/format them before i update the firmware? or i can run it on none initialized disk (like right from opening the bag)?

Yeah, in principle, you're right. You should follow the Instructions found in the first post of this thread, info perfectly valid for 5K3000 drives as well. Make sure to set IDE legacy mode if available in BIOS and flash only 1 drive at a time. To create a USB boot drive, you might use this method:
http://www.bjorn3d.com/articles/Making_An_NTFS_USB_Boot_Disk/1620.html
You can initialize/format the drive before or after the firmware update, it doesn't matter. The update doesn't change the data on the drive. However, I would recommend performing the update first, and then, after a power cycle of the drive (don't forget this !), format/copy data, etc.
Good luck !

If anyone has the 5C0 firmware for the 7k3000@2TB hard drive, I would be very interested. I've contacted Hitachi, but no reply yet.
I have both firmwares 580 and 5C0 on a few drives and I see relatively large performance increases of 5C0 over 580.
So any help would be greatly appreciated !

C'mon people. We know that you have firmware. Why not share? I send two emails to Hitachi support and never received reply.
I need firmware for 3TB 7K3000 and 5K3000. Also need firmware for 2TB 7K3000.

Thank you.

What FW version do you have now on these drives ?

Hi, would anyone mind helping? I'm in the same boat. Contacted support, but no response for 3 weeks. I have a mix of 7k3000 and 5k3000 drives. All of them 3tb units, but some with 580 and some 5C0 firmware. So, if someone can make available 5C0 firmware for both models, that would be much appreciated. I see someone has posted 5C0 for 2tb drives. I assume that is not the same. Thanks! Hammer

Does Hitachi have a FW updater app that you could possibly backup the HDD with the 5CO FW to then upload to the ones that havn't ?

The same series drives will probably have the same FW.
ie 5k3000, 3TB drive has 3x1TB platters ? the 2TB drive has 2x1TB platters ?
Excepting the lack of one platter for the 2TB drive they are probably identical.

5 platters yikes, I thought that was old time stuff.

So does that mean the
3TB drive = 5 platters x600GB/platter (10 heads)
2TB drive = 4 platters x600GB/platter (7 heads)
1.5TB drive = 3 platters x600GB/platter (5 heads)

The 2TB and 1.5TB waste 1/2 a platter by using only 1 head on the last platter.
Why not add that head and have 2.4 and 1.8GB drives respectively.

The internals are all the same, all the FW has to do is detect how many platters and from there how many heads to use to get the capacity

Hitachi have ruined the huge name IBM had with Ultra and Deskstar drives
My 2c worth.

The platters in this new generation of 5k3000 and 7k3000 have a max of 667 GB/platter.
So 3 platter for the 2TB drives (3x667) and 5 platters for the 3TB drives (short-stroked 5x600).
The newer 7K4000 drives have 5 platters (5x800).

Hitachi didn't ruin IBM's reputation. They regained a good reputation after IBM f***ed up their DeathStar series.... In fact Hitachi are by far the most trustworthy drives out there, read the forums.... Can be used in RAID also, with no problems.
It's a pitty that WD bought them... it's the end of cheap RAID.

"Deathstar" was pre-Hitachi. Hitachi makes great drives.

Also, remember a lot of storage innovation came from IBM's research so you basically have decades of doing great followed by a few bad years and a shifting focus (IBM at the time was investing in professional services not components.)
