I'm thinking of jumping into this too, read about 20 pages of this thread, still sorta confused on somethings (like understanding CPUZ info and how it may not be accurate so ask for hwinfo).

Like someone said a few pages ago, the ebay marketplace for ES v4 chips seems to have dried up a bit - very few sellers and options. Some of you have gotten great deals in the past, now a few of the same models are higher due to lack of inventory I guess?

Anyway, I need something that uses less than 105W TDP + a reasonable higher than 2ghz base clock speed/turbo (on all cores) and at least 8 cores... I'll be using it for ESXi vm and hoping for < $300 for the cpu... any suggestions?

This chart someone posted early on seems extremely helpful to see TDP, Core count, etc... Intel® Xeon® Processor E5 V3 and V4 Series Finder

I found globalkingisbest on ebay offering E5-2630v4 "QK3G" which I think is what someone said its basically almost retail for $270
INTEL XEON E5-2630v4 ES 2.2GHz 10Core 25M 20Thread Processor CPU -- but again not sure if its the best deal. I asked him for CPUZ and hwinfo and he sent what i am attaching here.derp3.png

I've put it all together last night. No error codes and gets in to the bios. But can't get any OS to boot.. Windows 8.1 installer from usb reboots the machine when you see the windows logo. Debian and other Linux distros stops at booting kernel with no additional messages or errors.

The only thing I've had boot is the memtest option on the linux flash drive. Ran it with no errors (using 2x 16GB Samsung ddr4 ecc ram)
I had the same issue with an z9pa-d8. Reset the BIOS to defaults and disable all sleep/hibernate modes. Also remove all unnecessary USB devices.
If this works enable the modes one after the other to see where it breaks.

Someone from Korean forum had gotten this cpu for $179 from U.S Ebay seller.
And as you can see, the samples cost higher than past and obviously dried out.
Maximum turbo boost for all cores are 2.4GHz and 3.1GHz for 1 core.
Also I don't think it's a good deal unless you don't enjoy games much.
That's why I've paid $345 for 6900k es1 each.

And the Cinebench result is even 2way cpu set-up. (20cores/40threads)

Here's the result for 4620 V3 es.
10c/20t 2.1GHz (2.3GHz for all cores and 2.5Ghz for 1 core)
I've gotten it for $129

Plus, I'm leaking out some oc'able v4 xeon info as i mentioned.
the other seller is selling 1650 V3 for 409 bucks.
This one is multiplier unlocked but limited oc function. (retail one is hard-locked anyway so this sample is lucky)
such as BCLK Strap and Memory Ratio.
for example, You can only set BCLK ratio to 1.0. and Memory overclocking support only 1.33 ratio.
(like 1866 2133 2400 2666 2933 3200 and etc)
It's a better overclocker than L0 stepping of 6900K ES1.
most R0 samples are able to oc around 4.1 to 4.3
Only one left in stock. so good luck anyone who get this cpu. cuz this sample is out of stock in chinese market.
I won't mention anything else. cuz nobody knows the information except few people.
I guarantee this, cuz i've tested 6c and 8c ones.

real potato.
CPU : 6900k es1 QHVJ 3.7GHz (1.4v) / cache 30x (offset +0.1v)
M/B : ASUS RAMPAGE V EXTREME
RAM : ESSENCORE KLEVV DDR4 8GB PC4-17000 4ea

this ram is oc'able to 3200 16-18-18-36 @ 1.35v though potato 6900k won't get it higher than 2133mhz :s
also stuck on 28x multiplier when using AVX/AVX2 lol
i don't really use AVX so it doesn't bother me anyway

I ended up opting out on the Xeon ES. I decided to go the "safer" route and ordered 2x Intel Xeon E5-2670 v1 retail chips instead. They are quite cheap, I paid 200-dollar total for both, including shipping and taxes. And I grabbed Supermicro X9DR3-F-B as motherboard.

As I've already got 64GB of Samsung 1333MHz ECC RAM, I didn't want to go for LGA2011v3 and DDR4 as that would add a lot to the overall cost. Xeon E5 v1 vs v2 is pretty much the same, it's only SandyBridge-E vs IvyBridge-E with tiny differences.

It will replace my Intel Xeon E3-1275 and Asus P8B-E/4L motherboard. So it's the same architecture (SandyBridge vs SandyBridge-E) and one generation newer on the motherboard/chipset. Going from Quad-core to Dual Octa-Core and being able to use all my RAM so I end up with 64GB instead of 32GB should make it into a more than capable hypervisior server for me.

The only things I miss by not going for something newer is m.2 slot on the motherboard and bootable NVMe OS drive and AVX-256 support.

prob need +0.06v for AVX2. but i ain't gonna use avx at all so...

If it was a E5-1680 V3 I may have picked one up at that price but I'd rather just wait for V3/V4 Xeons to fall in price just like the E5-26XX's of Sandy Bridge-EP. Sure it's cheaper than the 6900K but with Threadripper (LGA 4094 aka SP3)coming later this year even V3/V4 Xeons aren't as interesting in my opinion.
depends on how much price they will release those new cpus.
Threadripper will be 12/16 cores, i believe they won't be as cheap as the one i have gotten since R7 1700 is $313 and 1700x is $365 on amazon. so in my opinion, $364 for 1660 v3 qs is not bad at all.
and as you know, the difference between 1660v3 and 1680v3 are 300mhz and their overclocking abilities are the same.
I've already gotten 6900k es2 for $500 and es1s for $350 each. that's obviously a good deal unless intel prices down their 8core processors. intel's retail 8core is at least $999 and even ryzen 8cores are $329 to $499.
it would be so nice if skylake-x come out cheaper.

Hi, everyone!
I'm new in this forum as I am new in xeon cpu's.
I want to build a workstation, not for games and I don't have the time and the mood for overclocking.
This workstation will be for virtualisation, coding, media editing etc.
I have in mind the Asrock X99 Taichi mobo with one of E5-2683 V3, E5-2660 V4 or E5-2650 V4.
What I've found so far:

Intel Xeon E5-2683 V3 QS 2.0GHz 35M 14Core LGA2011-3 CPU Processor | eBay

Intel Xeon E5-2660 v4 ES 2GHz(2.5GHz)LGA2011-3 14C Compatible X99 i7-6900K 6950X | eBay
and
Intel Xeon E5-2650 v4 ES 2.2GHz LGA2011-3 12C Compatible X99 i7-6850K 6900K | eBay

I'm not very hot about the last one but it's an option...

I want your opinion and advice on my first step with xeon. Or should I end up with a Ryzen?

Thanks in advance!

if you have a budget, the best cpu for now is 2690 v4
14c 28t and base clock is 2.4ghz. all corr boost is 3.0ghz
price is around 559 to 599 bucks.

Thanks for the reply but this one is almost double my budget so it's not an option for me...

as far as i know, the first ones all core turbo is 2.3ghz
and the second ones all core turbo is 2.5ghz.
broadwell e has higher ipc so id recommend the second one.

At this point I wouldn't recommend either X99 HEDT or their Xeon equivalents. Ryzen is an option or you can wait for X299 and X399 for later this summer. X99 will be EOL'ed just like X79 was very likely by the end of this year or the next.
You have a point but I'm afraid that my budget is far away from the upcoming babes...

Well there's also the possibility that X299 and X399 will put pressure on X99 processors and motherboard prices. So it's better to wait and hold off even for previous gen hardware.
Yes, you' re right. The only problem is that the Xeon ES stock seems to decreases which mean that the prices are going up.
In this threads older posts, I've seen that a few months ago the ES CPUs were much cheaper than now. Don't you think that this is considerable?

P.S. Sorry for my bad English...

If you can't wait then just go for Ryzen or if you absolutely want X99 in the interim then you can get something like a 5820K and a good X99 motherboard and upgrade the processor later.
Almost what I was thinking!
The fact is that I can't wait for long, I have to build the machine in the next month, so I was thinking of buying an E5-2650L V3 QS (I want something with more than 10 cores/20 threads) that I've found on eBay and later I could buy a much better CPU.
What do you think about this one?

As I said I'm not experienced with ES/QS CPUs...

The price difference between OEM 2683v3 and ES/OS 2683v3 is fairly minimum. I'd go for OEM 2683v3 at the moment.

V4 should be dropping soon in price once X299 is officially out.

I checked for OEM but I can't see any difference compared to QS.
