I received the cpus a bit earlier than expected. I took a good look at them using a magnifying glass and made notes of a couple of things.
1. if you shine a light on the bottom of the chip, you can see a blue haze over part of the gold contacts. specifically it looks like something spilled on it then wiped off so that the gold contacts would not be blocked. I tried to clean it with so isopropyl spray but it did not seem to remove it. For those that have these chips, can you shine a light on the bottom and tilt it slightly to see if you notice this blue film?
2. the small chip on the top side, upper right corner (when gold triangle is on the bottom left) has a marking of 642
X8

It also has another marking lower right side of J20146 01 A99448
I still can't tell whether this is a skylake x or xeon w. I did get 2 so I may wind up delidding and looking under the cover!
I may be able to get an asus (both x299 and c422) to test but I would prefer to try on a supermicro if possible. the supermicro x11sra should be compatible with a real xeon w chip.
I checked my Xeon w2191b a OEM processor from Apple, marked 716,x8 on the PIROM chip,Intel i9 7900x,marked 642,x8.Does it means it's a Skylake-X CPU like i9?

Hello everyone.
I have an Asus x99-S motherboard and an Intel 6950x CPU. Unfortunately my CPU died a few days ago (no warranty). I am looking to buy an decent but cheap ES Xeon CPU. I saw these cheap 14core CPU's :
1) Intel Xeon E5-2695 v3 ES QEY6 2.2GHz (160 dollars)
2) Intel Xeon E5-2690 v4 ES QH2M 2.1GHz (240 dollars)

Do they worth the risk ?
Any other propositions ? My max budget 250 dollars otherwise i will sell the motherboard and change platform.
Thanks

In regards to the "PIROM" chip on i9s and Xeon Ws, it seems to be the Monza X8 by Impinj.
Monza X-8K Dura Product Brief / Datasheet
I had help, didn't find this on my own!

The same helper dead-buged it on his blank sample and read it with an arduino and it appears to be completely empty.

Interesting Question is what it contains on an actual i9 or XeonW because one might suspect that it contains config data for the cpu, rendering the CPU Unable to post once missing or empty.
At least one might hope so!

Both QE and QH are es version,I will suggest you to consider a QF/QG spec no. a V3 QS version,so you can got the max all core frequency.

This late stage of E5 v3 ES game, it is just not worth it.

Looking at the ebay seller post of CPUZ , QEY6 is a earlier ES chip, 14 cores turbo to 2.5 ghz.
You may have compatibility in the future.

With your budget of $250
Instead, I would look at E5-2678 v3 . E5-2580 v3 or E5-2683 v3 QS or Retail version.

Last week, I picked up a pair of E5-2680 v3 , tested them on Asrock X99 with All-Core-Turbo mod.
12 cores @ 3.3ghz.
With retail version of the chip, you would be sure it would be support for many more years.

Regarding of v4, unless you have a specific need , I like to stay with v3 QS or Retail chip.

PS. To give you some idea, I paid $155 each for the E5-2680 v3

[QUOTE =“RageBone,帖子:224451,成员:13153”]关于i9s和Xeon Ws的“PIROM”芯片,它似乎是Impinj的Monza X8。
Monza X-8K Dura

Fellow asylum mate - Need to steal some of your deal finding / making skills :)
Retail SKUs of E5-2667 v3 / E5-2678 v3 / E5-2680 v3 / E5-2683 v3 have been on my watch list must have missed the alert. The least I have seen on ebay recently was about ~$220 for E5-2678 v3. Did you get the 2680 in an auction or BO?

It was a late night Pacific timezone BO.
Seller is supplyou on eBay

I have not purchased from the seller before my purchase.
After my purchase, I started keeping tab of this seller
His / her listing price is not consistent , some are pretty normal price, then there are listing are a real gem.

Same topic, I have seen E5-2578 v3 and E5-2680 v3 in the low $200
here is a listing for $199
Intel Xeon E5-2678v3 SR20Z 12 Core 24 Threads 2.5G CPU E5-2680V3 CPU | eBay

My feeling is that we could seeing $175-$180 for E5-2678 v3 regularly soon.

Add:
Looking at the seller of E5-2678 v3 listing. CPUZ shown this chip has 33x turbo , 12 cores.
If you need the cpu now, it is not a bad deal. Could be even better deal if there is a 10% coupon

I think so as well. Looks like they were used on Dell Precision / HP Z workstations based on the eSISO descriptions. Not sure how accurate that is. Finally seeing some let up in both DDR3 & DDR4 prices as well.

I tend to restrict my searches to North America although I did buy one E5 V3 QS from Asia before. In general I prefer not to deal with the hassle of returns in case an issues arise. I do buy smaller / cheaper stuff like brackets etc from there.

For other items, I agree with you.

If you look back this thread 100 pages ago, we been buying CPU from China many months.

Patrick and I brought many ( me over 50 chips ) from China without major problem.
Most problem are shipping issue. They always refund promptly.
Other minor annoyance was some seller refund the money , claimed no inventory , but full refund.

I consider buying the cpu that i said earlier (e5-2695 v3) based on the performance that i saw in the benchmarks. I know that the ES versions will score a little lower. The seller told me that the cpu will work with my motherboard 100%.
I also found an Intel Xeon E5-2670 v3 QS QFS0 and an Intel Xeon E5-2685 v3 QS QGJK. (190 dollars both)

X99 Platform CPU benchmarks : PassMark Software - CPU Benchmarks - CPU Performance by Socket Type

Can you please tell me about the turbo mode mod. Does it work on Asus boards also ?

Consult with this page http://www.cpu-world.com/Related_CPUs/Socket 2011-3_Haswell.html

Xeon E5-2670 v3 QS QFS0 and an Intel Xeon E5-2685 v3 QS QGJK
Xeon E5-2685 v3 12 / 12 2.6 GHz 3.3 GHz 30 MB 2 120W QS QGJK
Xeon E5-2670 v3 12 / 24 2.3 GHz 3.1 GHz 30 MB 2 120W Stepping M0 QS

Both CPU are QS, should be able to do all-core-turbo , take your choice.

Another choice is this CPU around $250
Intel Xeon E5-4667 v3 QS QH9C 2GHz 16C LGA2011-3 C612 X99 Same as E5-2698 v3 | eBay

I seen this CPU below $250 before.
Keep search for it in the future. At $271.00, this listing is been around for a while.

I happened to have this CPU , it is doing 16c/32T @ 2.9ghz, motherboard is Asrock x99 ws.

I would not buy ES chip now, only QS or better version, because hardware or software of early ES version may not be around in the future.

Example, motherboard bios update ( you need newer feature like nvme support ) may render your ES cpu useless.
Vmware dropping cpu support for older cpu.

thanks for your answer. My motherboard does not seem to support E5-4667 v3 :

I want this cpu for home use, not professional use. Also my motherboard does not taking any more bios updates from 2018.
The only qs available in my budget are these : 2011-3 xeon qs | eBay

I think it's because they know they don't have a chance of winning in a dispute, so they avoid a situation where it would go that way. They're also always super polite too I've found :)

I also have an e5-4667 v3 QS. The first one I received was a dud and would cause my system to reboot, and then finally fail to the point where it couldn't even POST without hard locking. The replacement I received however has worked perfectly since I installed it in the fall. The seller was quick to blame my motherboard, but after some back and forth, agreed to replace the chip, or refund my money. I wish all ebay sellers were that quick with refunds.

It would be nice if I could find a board that would actually support the Phi, so that I can learn all about programming CPUs with hundreds of threads. :)
I've even picked up an S-code Xeon Phi for not too much at all. But the heat spreader is different and the heatsink clip won't attach correctly.

Hello everyone,

Long-time lurker here I finally received my Xeon 8176 ES QL1F from penguinestore, but I am not able to POST as it is stuck on PEI--CPU Initialization with the code B1

According to the documentation B1 corresponds to DXE Phase : 0xB1 -> Runtime Set Virtual Address MAP End

Hardware Details
MB Supermicro X11SPM-TF rev1.01 running latest IMPI(1.68) and BIOS(3.0c)
RAM Samsung LRDIMM 64GB, DDR4-2666, CL19-19-19, ECC (M386A8K40BM2-CTD)

I have contacted Supermicro's support, I did both CMOS and hard reset (shorting battery slot) with one stick of RAM in the DIMMA1 slot without any luck.
They think it's related to RAM as B1 set the virtual memory addresses, so I have contact the RAM supplier, which were quite surprised since it's correctly specs for the MB

The thing is Samsung RAM is not listed as validated for the MB I'm using though some X11 have it like the X11DAi-N

I'd like to have some inputs before I proceed with the replacement of the RAM with a validated one

[Edit]
Downgrading to BIOS 2.1 fix all my problems
