Hello everyone,
I'll admit, I wasn't thinking and bought 2 of these on eBay. If I'm correct, it looks like the date code is 08/2021. I'm also going to assume these are Samsung PM1643A drives with HPE firmware.
So, if these are low hour/low use drives, is it worth trying to get them back to Samsung firmware? Will these be functional on an LSI 9460-16i card?

Thanks
Ray

I have the controversial opinion (here) that you shouldn't **** around with firmware unless you are trying to resolve a problem. Plus you will struggle to find a samsung firmware in the first place. And I think nvme drives tend to be compatible despite custom firmwares. Don't know about trimode though.

I informed the seller not to ship, but if they do, these will go right into the trash. My mistake for not thinking.

In contrary you should **** around with firmware unless you want to end up with bricked drive. In case of Samsung this rule... works out.

presume you are reffering to the 32/42k hours bug. But I think those drives are much more recent

The drives were shipped already, if anybody wants them, just pay shipping, if not I’m trashing them. I gotta stop being impulsive on eBay!

What is your concern? If you have them you might as well use them. 520 LBA is easily fixable if it’s even the case

Honestly, I’m concerned about reliability, the ability to get firmware.

Well by that standard you would never buy any used enterprise drive. I think it is difficult to get firmware for most of them.

I treat drives like cattle not pets. A pet gets all your care and attention and it's a big drama if it dies. Cattle, if it's time to make a burger, so be it. All drives are unreliable to some extent. So whether a particular model is a bit more or less reliable than another shouldn't be a big deal, particularly if you have no way to tell which. You should have redundancy and backup in place in any case. Which is why I prefer many used but cheap over few new but expensive.

Just make sure you will update these with this.
I think it's different bug than earlier i mentioned with Dell.

Unfortunately not always fixable due to FW lock. Not sayin this one is limited to 520. Anyway +8b if used for good reason are good! Recently i had 4096+8b drive in my hands (2024 manufactured) so +8b is still alive thing.

If anyone is interested in 2 of these 1.92TB drives let me know as they arrive tomorrow and my plan is to go from my PO Box to the trash. Not messing with them. My mistake for not doing further research. $160 down the drain.
