If they are failing prematurely more than typical it is probably due to their new manufacturing process. Arista and Cisco 40/100G transceivers, including their CWDM4s, generally are rated the same (0-70C).
This could be one of those cases where people who deploy these in fan-modded switches/servers may be negatively impacted.
EDIT: I double-checked Intel's datasheet and I was mistaken. The "500m" SPTSBP2CLCxx transceivers are rated 15-55C whereas the 2km SPTSBP3CLCxx, 10km SPTSBP4CLCxx are rated 0-70C. My "500"m's VPD states 1km range.

On the topic of transceiver thermals, I just fried one of my old KAIAM 100G CWDM4 SM transceivers last night. They may be similar to these Intel ones.
My link dropped, so I pulled out the transceiver planning to push it back in, but it was so hot it was like touching a frying pan. When it cooled down it was still dead.
I had a slow fan pointed at my PCIe cards, and I didn't notice that it got unplugged when I de-dusted my computer with compressed air. It ran for about an hour with no airflow and that was enough to fry it.
Luckily I just bought 10 of the Intel ones so I have more transceivers to fry. And the 100G CX4 card is still OK, thank goodness.
Even with a slow fan pointing along the card, the exposed metal of the transceiver where the fiber plugs in is only warm. So it needs airflow but not a lot. I'm going to assume this is similar to other CWDM4s in the same vintage.

Hey David, have you measured temperature on the outside part of the transceiver during normal operation with infrared thermometer?
I am just curious what temperature do you get. I have same brand but model 4302. On the outside part where it goes out of 100G CX4 card i get around 30-32°C. Internal temp is around 20°C higher (e.g. 50-55°C). I think max temp for these transceivers is 70°C.

Yes actually I tried this with an IR thermometer, and saw the same, 30-32C which is about the same as it feels qualitatively - But it's reflective so I wasn't sure if it's really a valid measurement.
In the overheated state it was so hot that I subconsciously ripped my hand away when I grabbed it.

Just put a dab of thermal paste on any reflective surface and it should give you a very good approximation of the surface temperature through your FLIR.
Queations dear friends:
1) Will these work with MellanoX ConnectX 4 cards (the MPI 100 gig version) ? Also I'd I connected them back to back so no switch involved ?

1 - Yes, I use these in ConnectX-4 100G cards, they work perfectly.
2 - Not sure - Another member should be able to answer this. Some members have Dell ONs.
3 - The fiber cable you need is: Single Mode (SM) Duplex LC UPC. (Usually they are yellow cables with blue connectors)
Not pcie "cards", you need a pcie NIC. Mellanox ConnectX-3 is qsfp, x-4 probably is too. Did anyone try the x-3 with these down to 40g? I can't search easily with my phone
Note that ConnectX-4 and above will *not* accept these for 40G connections.
ConnectX-4 and above will refuse to link at 40G with non-Mellanox transceivers, even if the transceivers support 40G. 100G works fine though

I see this guy from youtube is using the similar or the same transceivers with CRS-504.
He has all the parts NIC/fiber/transceivers listed in the description.
I just got an open-box CRS-504 and going to give it a try by that list.

That's the beauty of single mode. Any reason why you've chosen armoured cables and not normal patch cables from fs.com?
