Manually installing NSX 4.1 data center on a VSphere 8.0U2 ESXI host (homelab)

Hi everyone, I have a baremetal install of ESXi 8 and would like to use NSX 4.1 to create a multi-tenancy environment for un-nested VMs running directly on the baremetal host. Is this just a matter of installing the NSX Manager in a 3-way VM cluster and configuring the Gateways? In the back of...

PM983 device itself not being detected by ESXi (8.0.1)

I bought 3x MZ1LB1T9HALS PM983 drives off eBay. They are all new with zero hours. I'm trying to use these with ESXi 8. I currently have 970 Evo Plus's that work just fine, even with vSAN. VMware HCL lists minimum supported firmware for the PM983 in 8U1 as EDA7202Q. Mine came with EDA73F2Q...

ESXi edge device: shutdown & power on

ESXi v8 (running 2 vms), one of the vm's is the firewall. This is an edge device in a medical xray trailer. The trailer's generator gets powered on in the morning & turned off at night. Any good idea's on how I deal with daily ESXi shutdown & power-on?

ESXi: Do you use NFSv4 or iSCSI for your multipath datastores? What's your stack look like?

Hey, So I'm wanting to set up some MPIO datastores for ESXi. They'd be for several different workloads: General file storage, video recording on VMs, and the VMs themselves. I looked long and hard at several cluster file systems, but let's face it: Ceph is complicated, OCFS2 is obscure and...

Did anyone here ditch vSphere for Proxmox, other?

Hey, I've got vSphere 7 and keep wondering at least once a year if I should ditch vSphere for something open source. I'm thinking KVM-based, but have my eye on the Illumos/FreeBSD bhyve projects, too - although what I've tried of them has been really rough around the edges. Also open to Xen...

Anyone using IB over ConnectX-3 w/ ESXi 7.0U1?

Hey, I've never used an IB adapter before, but I was thinking of doing some direct-attached IB adapters for my 3 ESXi hosts now that I learned my 3 Intel 82598EB adapters I dug out of storage are now no longer supported. I do have VCSA if that matters. I have 82599 10GbE for basic networking...

Affordable 10GbE+ for point to point between two VMware hosts ($100)

I'm looking for options to connect two VMware ESXi, 6.7.0 machines with the most out of the box compatibility with the host systems. I am considering a Chelsio T520 for 10Gbe but would like to explore any higher throughput options for TCP/IP and vMotion for the same price ($50-100 per card)...

Warning about LSI/Avago/Broadcom controllers (and other hardware) in ESXi

I have to be careful about what I say here, but if you read between the lines here I think you will understand what I'm getting at: VMware plans to deprecate vmkLinux APIs and associated driver ecosystem - VMware vSphere Blog So anything without a native vSphere driver ***MAY*** not working in...

Small office ESXi server sanity check

I need to replace an ageing HP DL360 G6 running a 4x disk RAID 10 array of SAS drives. It has the 1GB flash backed write cache option. It’s hosting Zimbra, UniFi, Plex (just me using that) and Elastix PBX plus a few light weight lab type VMs. At most it sees 2-3 users concurrently. I pay the...

    Reasonably priced Enterprise/Server SSD's in Europe ?

So I've been running my main vSphere host on 4 250G WD Blue SSD's in Raid5 for a while now. I went for the Blues as my raid controller somehow hated the Samsung 850EVO/PRO's. Now I know that running consumer SSD's like that is anything but best practice (especially for hosting a ton of VM's) and...

ESXi 6.7 can't change settings, don't survive reboot (passthrough issues, too!)

Fun times Noticing none of the settings in an ESXi 6.7 installation are surviving reboot. I created the USB with a stock installation ISO like always, downloaded from the VMWare website. Just used the USB key like a normal drive. Have been doing this for several years now. Been using ESXi...

Planning DIY NAS for 2-node vsphere cluster - advice needed

Hey! I am in the process of getting a proper 10gbit vaai supported storage solution for my home lab. I am considering the QNAP TS-831X, as it has 2x sfp+ built-in, and vaai support + vsphere plugin. Not sure if the performance will be good enough though. So, I found some hardware I might...

    (quiet) ESXi server upgrade recommendations

I currently have a HP G6 server with P410 RAID running my home vSphere setup. It hosts stuff like JIRA, Confluence, Zabbix and a few other bits and pieces I use for learning and running my day to day (non critical) business activities. Nothing requires 24/7 uptime, but obviously don't want it...
