Doing so had some impact: zpool iostat now shows the drives jumping back and forth between 1MB/s and 10MB/s instead of sitting at reasonably stable 4-5MB/s with write caching enabled. On average it appears to be very similar for the sequential writes.
Updated firmware on the HBA from v9 to v16, with no observable difference in the seq write speed throughput. Not quite sure how to debug further, time for some reading.
