I have a X540-T2 that I’m considering using in a PCI-E 4x slot. Would that limit the bandwidth? It’s a PCI-E 3.0 slot and I’m only using 1 of the 2 ports on the NIC. I noticed the X550 NICs are only 4x but I don’t want to upgrade if the old one will work at full speed.

As wikipedia tells us pcie3 speed per lane is 985MB/s. Times four is about 4GB/s.

The x540 is a 10 Gigabit card so can push 1.25 GB/s max.

Do you think it's limited?;)

X540 does not support PCIe 3.0, so the bandwidth will be around 500MB/s/lane.

Given that there are two ports, yes there is very much the possibility that the NIC will be bandwidth limited, but if you are using only one port it will probably be fine.

Do you guys have a recommendation of where I could purchase a legit X550? Don’t trust eBay, heard most are fakes.

Also would the power draw be much different between the 2?

Thanks
