Any idea on power on hours? if it's anything like the picture it seems they're no older than a year or so. If so, great find!

Very risky. You can lose a whopping amount of 12TB data in a blink of an eye. Remember, in storage there is no other god but Backup and Acronis is his messenger
You could say that about new drives too. I'd use drives like this on unRaid and sparingly. I would not build an entire new array with them. They are like a box of chocolates you know

I grabbed 30, will use for misc stuff, and will slap them in a WD102 for testing for a month or so at 100% with fio + monitoring

Im guesssing they.. came as pulls from WD102 :)

For the statement above about losing data in a blink of an eye and backups, totally. But the risk factor in drive failure is higher with unknown state drives than new for sure.

yep this is a good price on a 12TB.
they have pretty low prices on 8tb and 10tb drives also. Too bad tax and shipping become a significant chunk of the end cost.

10TB has cisco p/n and firmware, latest version of which is dated 2020 if you're lucky to find it. It is much cheaper indeed in terms of $/TB, but I decided not to gamble

fwiw, drive firmware updates are more for fixing major issues than some sort of upgrade or update that's needed every 2 minutes on every other device. I've never updated firmware, but I've never pushed anything with specific enclosure or controller requirements either (where firmwares will probably make a big difference).
