I'm not seeing a requirement in the documentation that the hardware has to be identical across nodes to run VSAN, just that the hardware must be on the HCL. Has this changed?Yes. They must be identical in terms of cpu, memory, hba, and ssd/hd

Hosts do NOT have to be identical as stated by a couple other members and guess what, if you have a larger cluster not all hosts have to provide storage but CAN still be consumers of vSAN hyperconverged stg w/in that cluster.
