If it had to be identical how would you do rolling upgrades ? (Which I am sure must be supported)

"The hosts in the Virtual SAN cluster do not need to be identical. Even the hosts that have no local disks can participate and run their virtual machines on the Virtual SAN datastore, as, for example, host 2 in the illustration."

This is a bit unsettling that with all the documentation openly out there we still get incorrect answers :-( SMH

Hosts do NOT have to be identical as stated by a couple other members and guess what, if you have a larger cluster not all hosts have to provide storage but CAN still be consumers of vSAN hyperconverged stg w/in that cluster.

Wealth of info/background can be found here when you're looking for some light reading (/sarcasm, if you don't know abt yellow-bricks/Duncan Epping especially if you live in the virtualization-space imma' assume you've been livin' under a rock)
