We use a lot of HP switches at work, but I was thinking of getting an IBM Bade switch for our higher performance needs. Here's my question: if I tag a device/ port to VLAN 2 on a HP switch can I do the same on the IBM switch and have that work across both?

I know that's noob but though people might have a quick y/n

Yeah vlan's are pretty interchangeable between vendors except for dynamic mode trunking which may be different from HP.

As long as each switch supports IEEE 802.1Q (which I'm pretty sure every major swich vendor does) VLAN will transverse different vendors of switches.

Yea it's the fancy stuff when you see vendors advertise features like VXLAN that you have to watch out for. Standard vlanning is just about as basic as plugging an Ethernet cable between two switches. It will work.

The only alternative to 802.1q is ISL from the pre-802.1q days. You will only see it on Cisco switches, and only for compatibility. The term VLAN is mostly synonymous with 802.1q now.
