Two Intel NICs and neither are recognized

I’ve bought two different intel Pro/1000 NICs, and no matter what I’ve tried I can’t get them to show up. The BIOS doesn’t see them, and Linux lspci doesn’t either. They are pic-e x4 cards.

I’ve tried changing the slots, I’ve poked around in the BIOS to see if there was some setting I could toggle. For the proxmox machine, I updated the BIOS and nothing.

If anyone has any experience with these cards or can offer any advice it would be greatly appreciated. My goal was to virtualize PfSense with these.

The systems I’ve tried on is:

• Ryzen 5 5600g + Asus ROG b550
  • OS: arch linux
• Ryzen 3700 + Gigabyte Aorus Pro b550-m
  • OS: proxmox
• i7-4790k + Asus Z97-A USB 3.1
  • OS: none, tried a few different distros from a live USB including arch and fedora

The cards are:

Do you know 100% that these cards actually work?

The HP one, yes.

One thing others have mentioned is that because these are pcie 1.0a all of my mobos are too new

If this turns out to be the problem, search for "i350-T4" on eBay. These will work with your motherboards, and you can wait for deals at less than $100 (sometimes as low as $50).

if that’s the case, do you think I’d be better served instead by getting an x540-t2 ?

use case is to virtualize pfsense through proxmox

It all depends on whether you have the need for 10Gbe (and infrastructure to support it), whether you really needed 4x separate ports, and whether you have cooling to support the 10Gbit card (they get hot).
If 2x ports is all you need, then you can get the 10Gbit for just a bit more ($75 or so at worst) than the 4-port 1Gbit.

I’m in canada, so the two are around the same price somehow with shipping.

I really only need 2 ports, and 10g isn’t necessary.

I just don’t want to waste money on another card that’s too old. If the 10g cards are a lot newer I hope that will work better, that’s why I was looking at that.
