I have a Quadro P1000 running in a H12SSL-i for video encoding/decoding. Haven't tried the physical video outputs however. Bios version 2.8.

[Edited to add bios version]

This is an old card but it does work with Supermicro H12SSL motherboards. I can confirm older AMD cards such as the FirePro W7000 are fully compatible with these boards both in the BIOS and operating system.

H12SSL

2.8 BIOS, confirm 3060 and 4060 work and are detected. No idea on video output, only using compute.

This whole thread really confuses me. GPUs are just PCIe devices. And there’s no reason any particular GPU wouldn’t be compatible with your motherboard. If it’s not working it’s either due to faulty hardware or incorrect BIOS settings.

Some graphics cards don't work with some supermicro epyc motherboards.
I have documented at least 2 AMD graphics cards I have personally observed to not work.
Supermicro does not have a list of approved graphics cards.
That is why I created this thread.

But which cards? And what BIOS settings? “Doesn’t work” is not enough context.

super micro doesn’t have a list of approved cards because it’s not necessary.

In theory: Yes.. In practice: Read Supermicro BIOS release notes. You will find BIOS fixes for $random PCIe cards from time to time :D

From the first post:
H11SSL v2 2.0a MSI rx 560 doesn't work
H11SSL v2 2.1 R9 270x doesn't work

And doesn't work means some boot graphics, but the boot process seems to freeze, and no
more graphics output. i.e. the boot appears to freeze.
Graphics cards are supposed to do graphics.

Sounds like incorrect bios settings and you’re not giving enough detail to confirm that you tried all permutations. I’m not sure you understand the option rom settings.

I’ve never had a SM board not work with a GPU that didn’t come down to bios settings or hardware issues (like PCIe risers). It’s just PCIe. It will work if not misconfigured.

Well the 2 AMD graphics cards didn't work but the nvidia k420 and p400 worked fine with no bios settings changes. I have a fair grasp of bios settings. I even called supermicro and they were unhelpful.

different cards have different firmware... just because one GPU with EFI works doesnt mean that another with Legacy firmware will work with the same settings. you need to have the appropriate settings. it's not one one-size-fits-all.

and if you have a GPU requiring legacy option roms, and you also have other conflicting BIOS settings, like CSM off or Secure boot on (which prohibits Legacy Option ROM) then you can get yourself into these situations.

like i said, BIOS settings.

So... It does make sense to make list with which GPUs will work with EFI without any more settings and which not, hm?

Not really. If you have a GPU that doesn’t support EFI then you need to adjust your settings to make it work. And that includes educating yourself on how to do so and learning about bios settings that may conflict with each other, all settings are not mutually exclusive. This thread makes the implication that either there’s something “special” about some hardware combinations where they just will not work at all and/or that these problems are only a problem with Supermicro. And it’s simply not true, you just have the wrong settings. or you’re trying to do something that will never work (like trying to boot an OS with secure boot while using an old GPU that doesn’t support EFI. This is not a hardware incompatibility, it’s software.

H12SSL-i - don't know bios version at time of typing this, MSI RTX 4060 Ti (AD106) I have running the latest UBuntu I could download as of today.
When I boot up both the VGA and the 4060 are active and it tells me to plug in a cable for the video - it does that twice, goes to code 92 for about 10 seconds and then starts booting, both monitors are active for a wee bit and then the VGA shuts down and the 4060 takes over, I only changed one BIOS setting which was to use the off board card first.
Am present about to start fluffing about a bit to see if I can get both up and running preferable with different outputs.

H12SSL-NT, BIOS 2.9:

RTX3050 does not work when a Mellanox ConnectX-6 Dx and multiple NVMe are installed?!

2x onboard M.2 + CX623106AC + RTX3050 -> Boot

2x onboard M.2 + CX623106AC + AOC-SLG4-4E4T -> Boot

2x onboard M.2 + CX623106AC + SSDs via onboard SlimSAS -> Boot

2x onboard M.2 + CX623106AC + AOC-SLG4-4E4T + SSDs via onboard SlimSAS -> Boot

2x onboard M.2 + CX623106AC + RTX3050 + AOC-SLG4-4E4T + SSDs via onboard SlimSAS -> no boot

2x onboard M.2 + RTX3050 + AOC-SLG4-4E4T + SSDs via onboard SlimSAS -> boot

WTF?!

BIOS Downgrade to 2.7 (from 2.9):

BIOS 2.7 + 2x onboard M.2 + CX623106AC + RTX3050 + AOC-SLG4-4E4T + SSDs via onboard SlimSAS -> boot

Nice regression
