Hey wondering if anyone can shed some light
I have a SM with a BPN-SAS3-216A which is faulty, Can a BPN-SAS2-216EB be substituted in?
I have no SAS3 drives and its for my homelab, I know the cables will be different but will the backplane fit?
Thanks

Yes, it should fit. The mounting holes should be the same. It's pretty common to swap them out on the 216 and 846 chassis.

I have no experience with the SAS3 backplanes, but I know it was quite easy to upgrade from a SAS to a SAS2 backplane on my Supermicro chassis. So I'd imagine the same being the case here too. I do like that we can do this on the SM chassis. :)

I've swapped a BPN-SAS3-216EL1 with a BPN-SAS-216A and saw no meaningful difference with the SAS3 backplane.

They are easy enough to swap IME. Ive got a Supermicro 2U BPN-SAS2-216EL2 here going unloved if interested.
