You probably have to completely slide out the node from the chassis before you can remove the plastic shroud.

Yep that's it. I needed to slide out the node and then move the plastic shroud from front to back.

Has anyone tried suspend (S3) on the Windmill? Is it working for you?

I can get it to go into S3 from Linux (systemctl suspend), but it doesn't come back. The HDD & Power LED stay on but dim somewhat in S3 mode.

Exiting S3 using WoL results in the board drawing 50W, Power LED on, but no serial console output and no response via the network.
Update to several things:
  1. My SAS cable arrived. Looping the first "SAS" header to the second "SAS" header does nothing. No change in lspci, nothing noticeably different in Linux or BIOS. Hot un/plugging the cable in Linux generates nothing in dmesg as one might expect from a hotplugged PCIe device. I'm thinking since the external PCIe links were not realized on the final product they're disabled in Quanta's firmware. One less item for them to QA test.
  2. Still not joy with S3. I'm thinking Quanta has just left S3 in the ACPI tables by mistake. The power consumption of the node in "S3" mode is ~1W, which IMO is far too low to be powering these RDIMMs. It seems suspiciously like power consumed in S4 or S5 by the Ethernet interface. Also when resuming from "S3" mode the video card runs the fan at full speed, which it also does if you power it up and the PCIe link is uninitialized.
Maybe someone can dig up more information on what the Power+HDD light on are supposed to mean. From my experiments it seems the Windmill doesn't support suspend to RAM (S3).

ME FW is the Intel Management Engine firmware which is part of Intel's Active Management Technology and the greater vPro product. It's essentially a little embedded computer that supervises and, well, manages the main system. It allows for fun things like "lights out management", system monitoring (even when the system isn't booted or so much as powered on), out-of-band provisioning and management, as well as a whole slew of other fun and interesting things.

It's a rather worrisome (to some) black box that only Intel and presumably the United States National Security Agency know the full capabilities of. In the words of the Coreboot project:
You might be interested in Trammell Hudson's NERF project. They seem to have preliminary support for the Windmill/Winterfell:

The NERF GitHub repo has some files for Winterfell, although he hasn't documented the installation instructions yet. I assume you just extract the current firmware, build NERF, and flash.

@hmartin, have you tried reaching out to anyone on the NERF team for details on these machines? I talked with Ron about various low-level firmware related things a few times over the years and he's always been incredibly helpful.

It makes sense. OCP users are likely only running Linux (since NERF's kexec doesn't support booting anything but Linux) and are probably more interested in decreasing time to POST, since servers can be quite notorious for the long time to POST. Apparently UEFI does not perform well when vendors decide to "add value"

I have not spoken to anyone on the NERF team about supporting the Windmill/Winterfell. I was thinking I would build NERF and see if it boots, but I have some other projects I need to finish first. So this is likely something I'll look at in the new year (and after their 34c3 talk)

It seems the latest BIOS versions were built by Facebook in-house.

I was looking for any info about remotely managing the Windmill / Winterfell servers but could not find any.

Does anybody here have that working (e.g. IPMI)? I would just like to do simple stuff such as remote boot, restart etc. in case of power failure. Is that possible on these servers?

The power consumption on B10 seems to be about 10% lower than A07, though this could just be a difference in configuration since the flashing wiped my settings. I did try to configure the same settings in B10 as A07, but since there was a slight difference in the options available in the setup menus, I cannot guarantee they were configured identically.

Dual E5-2630L with 8 DIMMs and a Quadro NVS 510:
A07: 50W idle
B10: 45W idle

B10 also looks a lot cleaner in the AMI setup, as there aren't half-completed menus strewn around. Also it doesn't spew "Running on Hardware" messages over the serial console like A07 does.

B10 also has an option in setup for PCIe hot-plug support, something I did not see in A07.

Also perhaps of interest to voxadam, B10 includes an option to enable the SAS option ROM. Although since I don't have the SAS headers soldered I can't state whether the ports actually work or not.

The miniSAS PCIe links still do not appear to work (at least when connected to each other).

Unfortunately my holy grail of S3 support is still not working. I think I might try installing Windows and see if suspend works in Windows, because it isn't working at all for me in Linux.

Are you running Linux? If so, you might be able to dump the entire firmware (or just the BIOS region) using flashrom.

Try something like:
# flashrom -p internal -r F03_3B11.bin

If it doesn't work because certain regions of flash are protected, you can try some other methods mentioned here: How to dump BIOS data to a file

Otherwise a SOIC16 socket and a Raspberry Pi or CH341 SPI reader would work for dumping the firmware. Cost for the SOIC16 socket and CH341 SPI flasher should be under $5 if ordered from AliExpress/Fleabay.
