Hello everyone,

I have a Mikrotik Switch (A) and I used to run a connection via SFP+ optics and OM3 fibre to another mikrotik (B) switch. The endpoint was connected via 1000Base-T to Mikrotik (B).

Mikrotik (B) died and I don't have the money (and probably don't even need) to buy a new Mikrotik.

I however can not switch the fibre for a CAT 5/6 cable.

Would it be possible to use a media converter sfp to 1000Base-T to connect this endpoint?

Does the Mikrotik (or generally speaking) does a SFP+ port in a switch accept sfp optics? (Speed would be downsized, but that's not a problem, because I don't need the 10GB at this endpoint.

Will the spf optics work with the OM3 fibre?
Or could I even keep one SFP+ optic in Mikrotik (A) and have a SFP optic in the mediaconverter?

Any help is appreciated.

If the transceivers at both end of the fibre are both speaking 1000BASE-SX, then it won't matter whether they are SFP or SFP+

Talking e.g. concerning CRS210-8G-2S+IN:

One cage is SFP/SFP+ supporting 1000M/10G and other is just SFP+ supporting 10G.
Block diagram here: http://i.mt.lv/routerboard/files/CRS210-150409135339.png

Regarding SFP modules, usually they support just one rate, but multirate products do exist.
That being said, e.g. S+85DLC03D from mikrotik supports just 10G rate and if you are using them, you will have to buy 1000M modules.

Thank you Marv,

as I am a beginner when it comes to sfp/sfp+ and as I have the feeling that you have a very good knowledge of this topic, please let me ask a bit more specific:

1st of all: I dont have the CRS 210-8G-2S+IN but the CRS226
RouterBoard.com : CRS226-24G-2S+IN

and this one should have 2 SFP+ ports.

And I would like to use two Intel AFBR-703SDZ-IN2 or
two FiberStore 10G85-3M-IN

if that would be possible (because I already have those parts)

and this media converter

CRS226 has similar scheme to CRS210, one port is 1G/10G and one 10G only.

I checked only briefly, but both of the modules you have are 10G SFP+, they will not work with 1000M link rate and you will have to buy Gigabit modules.

There are FC transceivers, I never tried to put one in ethernet switch.

Most of FC transceivers got 1000Base-SX/LX mode in them also, our lanparty association got hundreds of 2-4Gbps sfps that are used at 1000Base-SX/LX mode. But does the switch accept them is a totally another story, switches that don't have vendor locking don't care what you plug in there as long they operate at right speed and in ethernet mode.
