JBOD for SSDs?

I'm in search of a 1U or 2U chassis to use strictly for housing SSDs. It has to be less than 24" deep otherwise I'd go for a SuperMicro SC216 or the like. Needs to house 8-16 SSDs. Hotswap is not necessary but wouldn't turn it down . I'd prefer JBOD but I could make a regular chassis work.

Does a chassis like this exist?

 

I haven't seen many this shallow.

 

That's why I'm here. I can't find one. Hoping someone has had better luck than me.

 

Maybe you can just make your own?

 

I'd love it if this was a skill I possessed but it's jut not the case. I either don't have it, don't have the time, or don't have the will. I also just don't have the work space in my condo even if I wanted to .

 

Lenovo SA120 and then add 3.5" to 2.5" adapters?

 

Was hoping to avoid having to convert 3.5" drives but it's something I will consider if I get desperate.

 

This is probably my best bet that I can install Icy Dock cages in (already have 2 of them). However i can't find it for sale anyway. Only the L version which is too deep. Grrrrr.

This is another option though I imagine the cooling would be very poor in this without it being really noisy.

That's what my main goal has been, to find a 2U chassis not deeper than 23-24" that has 4 x 5.25" external bays. So far I'm coming up empty.

Yup that's pretty much exactly what I need. Can't find anything close to it in the U.S. though.

Plenty of options out there, maybe just not in your budget. SAS Expander is likely whats driving the price up.

 

Since you're on a budget and used is always cheaper why not Supermicro SC113's? Only 8 drives per 1U chassis, but even with a JBOD power board you're still way under a new short depth JBOD.
