That would be a very bad idea. The accessories for Dell servers are costly. It's always a best bet to buy a fully configured Dell server instead of buying it as parts. For instance, power supplies cost as much as $130 each (750W~1100W) used. Processors would be costing at-least $200 for a pair. Dell branded HDD or SSDs are way too overpriced even for used ones. By looking at the listing picture, even the PERC card is missing, so that would be $160 for a decent H710P. 1333Mhz DDR3 ram would cost around $12~$15 per 8GB stick. Additionally you might also want to consider getting rails and front bezel.

I have a basic R620 bought directly from Dell and I have spent more money on the accessory upgrades than what the server is worth. It's honestly not worth the hassle.
Probably true for some things. Depending on what CPUs you want it could be as cheap as 80 bucks, or, up to 200 as you said, but the same would hold true for a white box SM build. AFAIK Dell hardware isn't picky about what drives you put in the chassis so you don't need to buy branded stuff.

You could probably get a H710 mini for about 65-75 on best offer which is about what most people would pay for a similarly priced RoC adapter. Another option is an H310 mini instead which is what I would think most users would go for since there is a lot of buzz right now with converged storage and other things like ZFS/ceph, and, which is -about- as cheap as the standard H310.

PSUs do seem to cost a bit but again it's all about sifting through best offers on ebay. I don't think building a few out or even just 1 would cost that much to be honest. If I had to guess Fritz probably has a few dries and RAM already.

I suspect the whole box is proprietary. I'd prefer a MB I can transplant into another case. I was lucky enough to grab a Supermicro X9DRD-7LN4F-JBOD for $195 before prices went into orbit. it would be nice to stumble upon a similar deal but I'm not holding my breath.

There are some noname "OEM" single and dual socket 2011 motherboards on ebay fairly cheap.

The single 2011 boards are X79 and the dual 2011 are C602 chipsets.

Someone here did a review on the X79 board and the only problem was that it could not do crossfire/Sli.

The X79 board seems to have a good rating the dual is a unknown.

I'm thinking about getting the dual socket board to house the two E5-2620 cpu's that cost me $3.25 plus shipping for the pair, that board is under $150.00.

Man that's a good price. I'm looking for a new board now but can't seem to find a good deal for one.

I just upgraded my server from dual e5-2670 v1 cpu to Xeon E5-2651 V2 (SR19K) 12 Core L3 Cache Socket LGA2011 CPUs. I just checked the prices on ebay for the e5-2670 are they really over 100 each? I was thinking of saving them if i run into another motherboard but for that price i might just sell them off. thoughts?

i also have them on my "radar" , but the baseclock 1.8GHz without Turbo-boost looks to slow.

Is the 2670 v1 still be a good choice for a (40gbe/fdr ib & all flash) storage server or should I look for newer/"better" cpu?

@Klee, where are you finding dual 2011 boards for ~$150? Searching ebay for any variation of "2011 lga dual" starts me at supermicro boards.

Thanks @SammesOpfer, but I'm trying to avoid another S2600. I have two and they're finicky, have the power connectors in strange spots, and require hacking of sdr files to get fan speeds to reasonable levels.

@Klee The first board looks to be an Invetec B800, if so they are, generally speaking, reliable. They are decent value for money no frills entry level boards, but support is all but non existent. The good news is that pretty much everything on Invetec boards is off the shelf, so Chipset manufacturers are carrying the support load to some extent. I have no experience with that x79 board, but the Realtek nic's would kill it for me. It's still probably decent value for money though, depending on what you were doing with it :)

Looks like a good deal but 1.8Ghz base clock is quite low for virtualization workloads.

From time to time deals seem to be popping up. Whoever snagged these got a sweet deal on
X9DRD-7LN4F-JBOD + dual E5-2640 v2 + 64gb
SuperMicro 133-5 Server 2 x Xeon E5-2640 v2 @ 2GHz 65GB DDR3 RAM No HDD BOOTS | eBay
Great deal provided a single E5-2640v2 is worth $150.

I'm keeping my e5-2670 and putting them in another server. I'll use that server for home prod VMS that I use all the time. The two new e5 cpu do turbo up to 2.2 per cpu boss website.
